From byers-at-research.att.com Thu Oct 28 13:29:39 1999 From: "S.D.Byers" Stephen, A Summary: 300D pre 1975 has underengine oil filter mount (not at rear) and series glow plugs. 300D 1975 -1977 had no turbos. 300D after 1977 might have a turbo, and will have "Turbo" or "Turbodiesel" if it does. The naturally aspirated post 1977 300D has 8 more hp than the pre 1977. 300SD before 1981 is pretty much the same as the 300D Turbo and 300TD Turbo from 1977-1985 enginewise. Details like cruise control may differ. The 300SD 1981-1985 is more powerful. (about 20 more horses).Anything after 1985 is 6cyl. 300 or 350. The 350 is the infamous problem car. The 6cyl has an ecu I think. I have never touched one. Note the 240D is way more common in Europe. The 123 wagon came in 240TD form in Europe, but onlt 300TD form in US and only witha silly auto trans. Helpful or dead loss? I would definitely stick to the OM617 series of engine, i.e. the 5cyl 3 litre lumps. All past 1977 are very similar. Any 300 turbo will push a Scout along at 80+ quite happily. You can find good used 300D engines for 500 USD. I got one with 69k miles for that. A friend got a 450k 300SD with 90k engine for 750USD, check the rust belt areas for good engines in bad cars. Parts are easy to find on all continents. When buying there are some helpful hints that you might want to know, I am sure people on this list can help out.
