My 2002 Honda Accord was in a 5mph parking lot accident and had its carfax blemished with an accident. I have looked at completely totalled cars on ebay and ran their vins and they were completely clean of any records whatsoever. I think the way carfax collects their records is flawed. They wait for records to come up via insurance information. This is flawed for a couple of reasons. Well heeled customers may not make a claim after their high end car is damaged. For them it may be just as easy to write a BFC (big fucking check) instead of dealing with the insurance assholes. Cars that get reposessed are not claimed on insurance either. Lets say Wanda Wet does not pay her car payment on her Taurus and realizes its going to get reposessed. She smashed out all the windows and drives it into a telephone pole several times. The repo company takes the car and the creditor auctions the car off as is. Its repaired by the purchaser directly and the difference is passed onto the customer that did not pay their car payment. Im sure there are a LOT more holes in their data collection logic. The amazing thing about data collection services is they tout how good their data is yet are willing to do nothing in the case of a mistake or wrong data. A friend of mine kept getting rejected for jobs and had one employer outright tell him about a fellony conviction on his record that we was not aware of. A data collection service provided this wrong background check to all of his other employers. When he contacted the data collection service he got the "whell it must be right its what the computer says" number. Of course now he is in the process of sueing the pants off of everyone involved in the scenerio. Personally I would not base my decision to buy a car on carfax. I have bought cars that have been in accidents that have no records whatsoever on them. My brother's last car a 1996 Nissan Maxima was a prime example. The owner smashed the passengers side front wheel into a curb shattering it and destroying part of the suspension. We brought the car to the original dealership and the service writer showed us the original records from where the accident happened. The records indicated the customer refusing work that the dealership suggested that eventually broke as they had predicted. We would have probably avoided buying this car if we knew it had been wrecked in such a manner. My benz didn't reflect that it's been registered in three states other then what showed up on the report. My J10 didn't even register until it had 68,000 miles on it, only two readings provided. It also showed it as having a 3.7L L6 2bbl with OHV. It's a 4.2L... How can they claim no odometer readings on it when they only have two readings 9 years apart and nothing from the '80s??? They show 2 owners on my J10... I know there were at least three, possibly 4 from what I've been able to determine. They show three owners on my benz, that might be closer to reality, but still excludes the IL & WI records I have, they don't pick up until it's in CO. Since the Benz was serviced at MB dealers the info should be there... For grins I found the VIN for the '88 XJ, the little wagoneer, TWO TIMES TOTALLED, last time sold at an insurance auction... both times the titles were reissued... Both times major insurance companies reported them as totalled, had the titles declared TOTAL LOSS! on 1/6/98 it shows a title issued, then on 1/7/98 shows a title issued... that's when I reregistered it after a complete WA State Police Inspection because it had been totalled.
