I have owned both a 5 speed and a Automatic. 5 speed fuel economy was 38 mpg freeway. 4 speed automatic is 36 mpg freeway. The 1984-5 came with a 2.2L normally aspirated engine. Later models had the 2.5L normally aspirated some had the turbocharger. I miss the 5 speed I used to have and the Mercedes manual trannies of that vintage where nearly indestructible. As far as noises go, what kind: high pitch, clatta or a loud thumping? 300d is a robust car (123 chassis) not as economical though.(this class of car can go a Million+ miles) Unless you get the 300d with the 2.5L turbo they can do better. (I think it is a 124 chassis) What is your budget? They sell complete CD's with the tech manuals on them. I am also member of a diesel Mercedes mail list where all we talk about is diesels and maintenance of same. I have forwarded this to this list so you may be getting other replies, which is good because the 1984-5 190d is my niche. I am not savvy on the 1986 and beyond 190d. I am sure John can give you more info on the fuel economy of his 300d. Others on this list can (and will) give you their input as well. or..... If you are interested in joining the list you can get the details at digest.net Good luck, Derick - -----Original Message----- From: jeremy [mailto:jwchou-at-yahoo.com] Sent: Wednesday, November 03, 2004 12:40 PM To: derick-at-amburgey.us Subject: [SPAM] MB 190D Hi Derick, I run into your website today when I was searching for information about 190D that I am thinking of buying for commuting due to high gas price in CA. With your hand on experience with this particular car, I wonder if you could give me some advise. 1. JerryX's 190D was getting 36-40mpg, is that normal or exceptional with this type of car, is that with auto or stick transmission 2. Does 190D have engine choice, if so, which one should I look for? 3. Is auto transmission reliable or stick is a better choice. 4. Once I test drove a 190D it had loud engine noise. I didn't know what that was. Is that a typical problem when it gets old? 5. I see you have 300D. Which one do you think is better built car? 6. Where do I go to get more info about the car. I.m the type who like to work on the car when I have time. Thanks in advance for your time and advise. Jeremy __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Check out the new Yahoo! I've got a '91 with the 2.5L TD. I'm getting around 30mpg in town and as high as 39.75 mpg on the highway. The 190ds are the 201 body style. I had one with the 2.2L as well, nice little cars. The clunking you're hearing could be the rear control arms or suspension... pretty common issue, not expensive to deal with. I prefer the 124 chassis over the 201 hands down... the 123 chassis has many benefits, but the 124 is more refined in several ways and more economical. info on the Diesel Benz list is below: john ====================================================================================== To subscribe to a list on digest.net, EMAIL majordomo-at-digest.net, no subject needed, in the body: subscribe [ fsj | xj | diesel-benz ] end (note: select only one of the options in the brackets) You will need to reply to an authentication message. Seems they bought it with the idea of restoring it and then realized they didn't know what they were doing and didn't have any place to work on it etc. She's got the thing sitting over at her dad's house under a tarp. I don't think the car has run in about 7 years... I talked to a good mechanic friend, he says the engine will be fine. The clutch (hydraulic) doesn't work... at all. It does have the overdrive. According to the specs this car is capable of 50mpg. It has nice lines, comfy seats and good glass. the top looks ok, but doesn't seem to close all the way, not sure why. So, dire warnings? Should I run or plunk down the initial $600 and keep shelling bills out until it's moving under it's own power or what? :) When I was in High School I really wanted a sports cars... wanted one, but instead had a '68 Mustang. ;) I wanted a Lotus Europa Special, or an MGB GT, the Spitfire or TR6 were also cars I had considered... So, I'm putting it before my wheeled and esteemed colleagues for advice. BTW, I did look at an '82 300D with a bad engine for $800 this morning... thinking about putting that on the GMC Jimmy frame... but think I'll not do that... ;) For those of you in the popcorn section the Spitfire would probably fall between the frame rails of the Jimmy... ;) http://www.wagoneers.com/DieselBenz/CARS/82-300d-bad-engine/ I really don't have time for a project, but than again, why would I miss an opportunity to save a classic? :) I know my wife won't ride in it, she doesn't like convertibles... So, that brings me to another question, where do I get a hard top for this thing? :) (and an automatic transmission... oh, just kidding on the last one... rofl... actually I'm thinking if the engine is kaput that I'd look for a complete engine/auto trans setup that would fit... put some fire in this spit. :) A nice fuel injected setup would be pretty cool... a sleeper sports car... too bad a v8 wouldn't fit... or would it? :) If I could get a hardtop I might consider a 240d driveline... Diesels and convertibles don't seem to be a good mix... dreaming on a budget... :) if any sane person in the seattle area has interest in this project step forward and relieve me of this problem... :) standing by for suggestions now. :) (pass the popcorn... ;) btw, did snap a few night shots of seattle on the way home: http://wagoneers.com/fotos/2004/space-needle-nov3.jpg http://wagoneers.com/fotos/2004/seattle-skyline-nov3.jpg john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://wagoneers.com ** ** http://freegift.net ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Nov 2004 07:31:21 +0000 From: Stephen Rigley Subject: Re: [db] RE: MB 190D Now I'm confused... tell me, how do you work out MPG in N.'merica?
