Luk 20:2 And spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority?
Luk 20:2 and they spoke, saying to Him, "Tell us by what authority You are doing these things, or who is the one who gave You this authority?"
Luk 20:3 And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me:
Luk 20:3 Jesus answered and said to them, "I will also ask you a question, and you tell Me:
Luk 20:4 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?
Luk 20:4 Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?"
Luk 20:4 τὸ βάπτισμα ἰωάννου ἐξ οὐρανοῦ ἦν ἢ ἐξ ἀνθρώπων;
Luk 20:5 And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not?
Luk 20:5 They reasoned among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' He will say, 'Why did you not believe him?'
Luk 20:5 οἱ δὲ συνελογίσαντο πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς λέγοντες ὅτι ἐὰν εἴπωμεν, ἐξ οὐρανοῦ, ἐρεῖ, διὰ τί οὐκ ἐπιστεύσατε αὐτῶ;
Luk 20:6 But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet.
Luk 20:6 But if we say, 'From men,' all the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced that John was a prophet."
Luk 20:7 And they answered, that they could not tell whence it was.
Luk 20:7 So they answered that they did not know where it came from.
Luk 20:8 And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.
Luk 20:8 And Jesus said to them, "Nor will I tell you by what authority I do these things."
Luk 20:9 Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time.
Luk 20:9 And He began to tell the people this parable. "A man planted a vineyard and rented it out to vine-growers, and went on a journey for a long time.
Luk 20:10 And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty.
Luk 20:10 At the harvest time he sent a slave to the vine-growers, so that they would give him some of the produce of the vineyard; but the vine-growers beat him and sent him away empty-handed.
Luk 20:11 And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty.
Luk 20:11 And he proceeded to send another slave; and they beat him also and treated him shamefully and sent him away empty-handed.
Luk 20:12 And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out.
Luk 20:12 And he proceeded to send a third; and this one also they wounded and cast out.
Luk 20:13 Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him.
Luk 20:13 The owner of the vineyard said, 'What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.'
Luk 20:14 But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.
Luk 20:14 But when the vine-growers saw him, they reasoned with one another, saying, 'This is the heir; let us kill him so that the inheritance will be ours.'
Luk 20:15 So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them?
Luk 20:15 So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What, then, will the owner of the vineyard do to them?
Luk 20:15 καὶ ἐκβαλόντες αὐτὸν ἔξω τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος ἀπέκτειναν. τί οὗν ποιήσει αὐτοῖς ὁ κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος;
Luk 20:16 He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid.
Luk 20:16 He will come and destroy these vine-growers and will give the vineyard to others." When they heard it, they said, "May it never be!"
Luk 20:17 And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?
Luk 20:17 But Jesus looked at them and said, "What then is this that is written: 'THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone'?
Luk 20:17 ὁ δὲ ἐμβλέψας αὐτοῖς εἶπεν, τί οὗν ἐστιν τὸ γεγραμμένον τοῦτο· λίθον ὃν ἀπεδοκίμασαν οἱ οἰκοδομοῦντες, οὖτος ἐγενήθη εἰς κεφαλὴν γωνίας;
Luk 20:18 Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.
Luk 20:18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust."
Luk 20:19 And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them.
Luk 20:19 The scribes and the chief priests tried to lay hands on Him that very hour, and they feared the people; for they understood that He spoke this parable against them.
Luk 20:20 And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.
Luk 20:20 So they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, in order that they might catch Him in some statement, so that they could deliver Him to the rule and the authority of the governor.
Luk 20:21 And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly:
Luk 20:21 They questioned Him, saying, "Teacher, we know that You speak and teach correctly, and You are not partial to any, but teach the way of God in truth.
Luk 20:22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no?
Luk 20:22 Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?"
Luk 20:22 ἔξεστιν ἡμᾶς καίσαρι φόρον δοῦναι ἢ οὔ;
Luk 20:23 But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me?
Luk 20:23 But He detected their trickery and said to them,
Luk 20:24 Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Caesar's.
Luk 20:24 "Show Me a denarius. Whose likeness and inscription does it have?" They said, "Caesar's."
Luk 20:25 And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's.
Luk 20:25 And He said to them, "Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."
Luk 20:26 And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.
Luk 20:26 And they were unable to catch Him in a saying in the presence of the people; and being amazed at His answer, they became silent.
Luk 20:27 Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him,
Luk 20:27 Now there came to Him some of the Sadducees (who say that there is no resurrection),
Luk 20:28 Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
Luk 20:28 and they questioned Him, saying, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, having a wife, and he is childless, his brother should marry the wife and raise up children to his brother.
Luk 20:29 There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children.
Luk 20:29 Now there were seven brothers; and the first took a wife and died childless;
Luk 20:30 And the second took her to wife, and he died childless.
Luk 20:30 and the second
Luk 20:30 καὶ ὁ δεύτερος
Luk 20:31 And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died.
Luk 20:31 and the third married her; and in the same way all seven died, leaving no children.
Luk 20:32 Last of all the woman died also.
Luk 20:32 Finally the woman died also.
Luk 20:33 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife.
Luk 20:33 In the resurrection therefore, which one's wife will she be? For all seven had married her."
Luk 20:34 And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:
Luk 20:34 Jesus said to them, "The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage,
Luk 20:35 But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:
Luk 20:35 but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage;
Luk 20:36 Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.
Luk 20:36 for they cannot even die anymore, because they are like angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.
Luk 20:37 Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, AND THE GOD OF ISAAC, AND THE GOD OF JACOB.
Luk 20:37 But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the burning bush, where he calls the Lord THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, AND THE GOD OF ISAAC, AND THE GOD OF JACOB.
Luk 20:38 For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.
Luk 20:38 Now He is not the God of the dead but of the living; for all live to Him."
Luk 20:39 Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said.
Luk 20:39 Some of the scribes answered and said, "Teacher, You have spoken well."
Luk 20:40 And after that they durst not ask him any question at all.
Luk 20:40 For they did not have courage to question Him any longer about anything.
Luk 20:41 And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David's son?
Luk 20:41 Then He said to them, "How is it that they say the Christ is David's son?
Luk 20:41 εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτούς, πῶς λέγουσιν τὸν χριστὸν εἶναι δαυὶδ υἱόν;
Luk 20:42 And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
Luk 20:42 For David himself says in the book of Psalms, 'THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,
Luk 20:43 Till I make thine enemies thy footstool.
Luk 20:43 UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET."'
Luk 20:44 David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son?
Luk 20:44 Therefore David calls Him 'Lord,' and how is He his son?"
Luk 20:44 δαυὶδ οὗν κύριον αὐτὸν καλεῖ, καὶ πῶς αὐτοῦ υἱός ἐστιν;
Luk 20:45 Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples,
Luk 20:45 And while all the people were listening, He said to the disciples,
Luk 20:46 Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts;
Luk 20:46 "Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love respectful greetings in the market places, and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets,
Luk 20:47 Which devour widows' houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.
Luk 20:47 who devour widows' houses, and for appearance's sake offer long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation."
