From Carnuck@webtv.net Mon Jul 17 18:13:19 2000 From: James Blair A: I did a 727 trans for a buddy (no more for awhile! Really taxed the extent of my memory and patience for a bit!) Here is some useful info when putting in a NEW (not used, but most apply) 727 trans. If your tranny is shipped, and the xfercase end of the crate is damaged during shipping (or any other damage) take pics in case something goes wrong with it. When I opened my spare core 727 up, I discovered someone had dropped the trans on it's tail, and the springs for the one way sprag were crushed (which is why I only had low gear when I manually shifted it into 1st) I replace the rollers and springs, plus new BW clutches because it's cheap insurance. ($7.50 IIRC for the rollers and springs) During install, gently stand the trans (4x4 only) on the tail housing (It stands great on that flat end!) and pour some ATF into the front pump before installing the converter. Also put as much ATF in the converter as you can (also brand new) and put at least 5-8 quarts in the trans before starting. The other trans I was going to build had a crack in the case where the sprag is. (A growling noise and slippage in low gear w/o manually shifting in gear is a tip off) The shift linkage (V8 ones) may be different (I only had 6 cyl ones) so it's best to swap yours on during the changeover, or at least match up (just note top and bottom when you undo them.) I installed the higher speed lockup spring kit (It'll feel like it has 4th gear about 45 -55 mph instead of 37 mph) When you start the engine, make sure the trans is in neutral (The pump doesn't flow in park on Dodge trannies) then when the idle is down, switch through all the gears and let it sit till you feel that gear shifts engaged. Let it sit at least 1 minute in each gear and check to see if it's full of fluid. Go through the range of gears at least 3 times, then check the oil level, fill till full mark level doesn't drop, and test roll it a few feet forwards and back, and check the level again, then take it for a short drive. (Stop and check again! Also check for leaks!) Manually go through the gears to see that it goes from 1st to 2nd at 17-20 mph, and to drive between 25 and 35 mph w/o acceleration. (If not, tighten the passing gear linkage, or add a spring like I have in the trans tech pic on photopoint. Too low of upshift speed will damage the trans in short order! The pressure will be too low to keep the clutches engaged, and mass slippage and damage occurs!) Enjoy! ************************************* JimBlair, Seattle,WA '83 Cher 4dr, '84 J10 http://homepages.go.com/~carnuck/carnuck.html **************************************
