There was evidence of blowby when I bought it. The plugs were really bad, as was the Holley carb on the clifford manifold. The motor was hacked up... emissions gone, electronic ignition gone... etc. It's no surprise that it's bad. And I'm sure it'll keep running for some time as is. My motivation for switching to a TBI was to fix the idle problem and economy. But it makes little sense to drop a grand in a TBI on a bad motor. For the same money I can buy a running 4.0L. :) john - ------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - ------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 22:14:16 -0800 From: "Robert Glover" Subject: xj: Who wanted a 4.0 6cyl? I _think_ I put everything back together the way it came off (I had to remove the air cleaner, disconnect the upper radiator hose, and stuff like that to get to it). I've checked and rechecked and everything LOOKS fine. It cranks, but won't start. First, I know virtually nothing about carbs. I do know that in theory, you check for fuel, and then spark. Well, I replaced the fuel filter to be sure, and if I leave the line from the fuel filter to the carb disconnected, it'll shoot gas about 18" when cranking. So we're getting fuel TO the carb. However, I haven't seen any fuel in the carb (liquid or misting), but I also haven't stared down into it when cranking either. I have very little sense of smell (sinus issues) so smelling for gas isn't always practical. I suppose next I'll pop off the distributor cap, but I was hoping somebody MIGHT know of something that I could have missed that would be the culprit. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
