How true is true for a rim ? While researching rims, i found some interesting info. It seems the proper way to measure a rim for "out of round" is with a dial indicator on the bead seats. But I found diffrering allowable tolerances: Alcoa (makers of the forged allot M/T rims) say .045" is acceptable. Diamond racing wheels says .010 to .030 for a road race wheel, most being .015 to .020) TSW alloy rims specifies less than .006, which seems extremely precise to me. What do you think? Another thing - I learned that most if not all cars and light trucks have lugcentric wheels, that is, the lug holes are machined to hold the wheel centered, and the centre hub hole is cut out just for clearance. by contrast, some racing and industrial / Heavy truck wheels are hubcentric, being centered via the hub fit in the centre hole. Here's my concern: When you get tires balanced, buddy puts them on the machine with an adaptor that fits through the centre hole...but what if it isn;t machined perfectly true, as well may be the case with lug-centric wheels. then he tries / succeeds in balancing them, but not in the manner which they will be mounted on the vehicle , which seams pointless. Is this the difference I've heard about called "dynamic" or spin balancing. As in, if the tire is spin balanced, they actually do it by mounting via the lugs. I mean, even in regular balancing they do actually spin them around on the machine a bit between weights. So is this the difference? Bill BTW - you can check out my tables of every 5x4.5 alloy wheel I could find from RX7 to Jeep to Infiniti to Weld and Micky Thompson. Question Re: xj: Yoke swapping Jeff, I tried to order this but all I got was the stock strp style yoke. can you confirm 1) the part number for the yoke 2) that it was indeed a yoke that uses the u-bolt style kit...of course it was - why else would you have posted it and ordered the u-bolt kits too. disregard, but please check the # for me if you can. The part i went to pick up came in a box with the number 2-4-8091-1X on the side of the box. But the 1X was crossed out and in the box was the stock strap style yoke. And I know sometimes that Spicer adds or deletes an X or the like to differentiate betwwen similar products. And the place doesn't sell stuff by application - so i can't just ask for a CJ yoke. Thanks Bill Jeff wrote: > Well, I ordered two DAN 2-4-8091x 1310 yokes for my axles. I also > ordered two DAN 2-94-28x u-bolt kits for the yokes. The yokes were $24 > each and the u-bolts were $3. On the way to Idaho to drop my sister off, I got a noise that sounded like a binding speedo cable, so I pulled over. I was going to disconnect the cable but noticed that the engine was literally pouring oil off it. Thinking the worst (blown main seal) I opened the hood and started to look around. What I found was a oil saturated breather (I have an el cheapo aftermarket one that I put in after I notice some blowby) and what looked like oil coming out of the PCV valve grommet. So I checked the oil level and was only down about half a quart. I have been driving around since Thursday like this with 3 spare quarts of oil in the Jeep and have guesstimated to be losing about half a quart of oil every couple of hundred miles. I'm thinking that the PCV valve is clogged and its blowing oil through the breather. Now I did once participate in an extraction where we ran a short strap through the wheel (5 spoked) and back on itself. Then a winch line was run to a snatch block up in a tree above the wheel and then down to the strap. The winch then lifted the vehicle by the wheel and raised everything above the ground!
