Mike, Dan's cage is very complex and there aren't many pics of the actual finished product. It doesn't just go over it but it goes THROUGH it too. I had a chance to ride in it a couple of weeks back and it's a real trail rig. There isn't really a straight piece of metal on that thing, lol. Dan is reluctant to give out all the specs because his view on Jeeping and creating new things is to be original. "That's the fun and challenge of it," he says. His first design was as strong as what he has now. I'd say go for it but make sure you plan it out well, since it's an expensive process. Also keep in mind that from top to bottom at about the middle of the rig he has two large supports running right through the back seat. It's pretty well necessary in order to support the weight of the rig on the roof. Good luck! Yeah, his first cage bent when he rolled it. There is a LOT of bracing required to keep the cage from moving too much as to bend the body. The idea of a roll cage is more to protect the driver not the car. (ie nascar) the bodies are sacrificial but the drivers aren't (or aren't supposed to be) it's a lot easier to protect a human in a big labyrinth of metal tube than it would be to protect a big truck which is only slightly smaller than the cage. Therefore it would be difficult or time consuming to make the cage so strong that it wouldn't bend into the body. Yes, it would protect it more than there is now but i don't konw that you still wouldn't end up with a bent up truck. Mike, those pics don't do the damage justice on Dan's XJ. The doors on that side don't seal anymore due to the damaged door frame. Originally the cage was made to protect him in a rollover, which it did properly. Now it's fixed to minimize major structural damage. I rode in it two weeks ago and it works quite well. Tree stump on the trail? No problem, slide against it! Big rock on the edge of the trail? Again, bump right by it. It's a very complex cage going through the roof, down through the back seats, and through the floorboards. It cost him a lot of research, time, and money to have it custom made. There aren't detailed pictures out of respect for those reasons. I personally don't care about Dan's equipment, I just wheel with the man. :o) Phil - -----Original Message----- From: owner-xj-at-digest.net [mailto:owner-xj-at-digest.net]On Behalf Of Mike - - G Sent: Thursday, September 06, 2001 12:28 AM To: xj-at-digest.net Subject: Re: xj: RE: RE: External Roll Cage ? So they did not feel it safe to move it any further. Plus they said that they did not want to tighten the cable further, because it would cause the rear brakes to rub when they should not be making contact. As for the cup holder, which is the real motivation; I'm not that talented with a rotary tool, to be able to slice up my cup holder. So I think I'd like to see pics of the side mounted cup holder. Who has their digital camera handy? Plus I know somebody said you could order the side cup holder from Chrysler. So what years does this unit fit? Until The Next Dimension, Admiral "Coluch."
