Commencing a total strip down and rebuild - will be doing an article for Jeepwire. Called Warn and got exploded parts diagram. need to know: - - type of lubricants and where? - - anyone have an "owners manual" that could be scanned in? - - for testing solenoids - procedure is just to apply 12v to small terminal, ground other small terminal, and check for continuity between the 2 large studs? - - stupid quaestion - can I use my battery charger for the 12v source? (scary how ignant i am of electrons!) - - How do I remove the motor? It isn't obvious and I don't want to force it. Thanks Bill ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Feb 2002 08:47:49 -0700 From: "Aaron Storms" Subject: Re: xj: winch rebuild tech Sounds like fun Bill - hope you got a great deal on it. I bought one about two years ago that was running, but thought it was too big for my xj at the time and sold it for $300US. I know that new they go for over $1100US, so guess it'd be worth the rebuild effort. I'm running a Warn 8000 and just use an extra car battery for working with it when off the rig, so don't see why a charger wouldn't work for your bench purposes as well. Also call Warn on the owners manual, just tell them you lost yours, they will send you one. Keep in mind, they are generic. To test the solenoids, ground them at the metal mounting bracket. Apply power to the small terminal that currently has a wire on it, the other small terminal is not used. You should hear a loud click, if so, then test for continuity between large studs. Some battery chargers will work for this, it also possible to damage some. Just use an old battery, you need it for the motor test anyway. Motor test, run a cable from the ground lug (threaded hole) on side of motor to neg term of battery. Run a cable from the "A" term(the stud at the end of the motor all by it self) to the pos term of battery. Also run a cable from either the "1" or "2" terminal to the pos battery term, this will run the motor, which term you hook power to will determine direction. Real world directions, use jumper cables and a long screwdriver to jump power from A to 1 or 2. To remove motor, simply remove the 2 bolts at the end of the motor, they are long and go all the through the motor. As you pull a bolt out sniff it (really), if it smells nasty burnt, you'll need a new motor. I still believe the 8274 is the best winch ever built, the HS9500i is coming close. Hope this helps Bill If it was safe, it wouldn't be fun! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Feb 2002 20:50:17 -0400 From: "samfans" Subject: xj: Re: Re: winch rebuild tech Wow Bill ! Perfect...that is just what I was looking for. Many thanks. Confirm it will be safe to test spin the motor, even with it removed from the winch? Looking at my solenoid box, and figuring the current flow it seems to me: (lets label the far left terminal, closest to the solenoid pack F1, the one right close to it F2, and the one by itself A) when power from the switch is applied to the green wire, F2 is conneted to A, and 12v+ is applied to F1. When the remote switch is actioned the other way, power is applied to the brown wire, F1 is connected to A, and 12v+ is applied to 2. This seems different from the test you suggested. Maybe I have it wrong, or the test will run fine anyway? Just a bit nervous, don;t want to fry anything before i've even started! When you activate the remote, you trigger 2 solenoids, which are diaganal from each other. 2 of them are "bussed" so that power is sent to the "a" term no matter which way the winch runs. I never noticed it aslo connecting to an "f" term but i suppose it's possible. I was referring to testing a motor with out a solenoid box. You definatly want some kind of retention for the armature if testing off the winch. The magnetic fields could easily cause the armature jump out. I understand it now. Green (power in i think) = +12v to F1 and A Brown (power out) = +12v to F2 and A.
