PohSang, Thank you for your email. I'm happy to hear that the xj list is of help to you. It's a great bunch of folks. I've had to the pleasure to meet many from the list. There are a number of folks in the bay area, but I'm not sure about Sacramento, there may be a few. I'll forward this to the list. I am about 800 miles north of Sacramento, it's about a 14 hour drive from here. :) I hope your trip is pleasant and safe. I seem to remember seeing maybe an old J-truck D44 as having a thicker cover. My XJ D44 has one that's probably 18 or 16 gauge stamped metal. I almost dented it trying to hammer it off to let the gear oil out. Also (this really pertains to most axles) but what makes the carrier different that there are 2 different carriers for the different gear sets. I realize that i need on to install my 4.56's but what is different about the lower ratio carrier compared to the upper ratio carrier. Does anyone have a photo of what the factory limited slip carrier looks like? There was a tag on the axle that said use limited slip lube but the carrier looks much like a standard carrier (4 spider gears and a cross pin) Thanks. The reason for for different carriers is actually the smaller pinion size of lower(higher numeric) gears. Since they have fewer teeth, they are smaller in diameter. In order to get the ring gear teeth to lne up with out making the ring gear super thick, they moved it over. On some axles(mainly GM), it is possible to get ring gear spacers. There are also some special after market gears with extra thick ring gears. Niether of these are cost effective for dana 30,35 or 44 axles since the new carriers are only ~ $50. Personally, I only look at 87+ xj models to get the 4.0 with fuel injection, but the 2.5 4cyl was WAY better than the problematic 2.8 v6 offered back then and already has 4:10 geared axles to boot! Not sure on the t-case/tranny, but there's a local CO-XJ guy who is building one and just swapped in a fuel injection system from a later model, though that was a lot of work and I'm still not sure it's running correctly.
