My problem is that my 88 cherokee with a 4.0 and auto is comsuming fuel at a rate of about 10-12 miles per gallon. I was averaging 15-17 with my best of 21mpg. Anyone know what might be causing this. Found out she only had like 20psi in the tires, the cold snap had deflated them pretty badly ... Aired them back up and the mileage went up accordingly. Though now we're back to it dropped off again, I suspect the tranny is slipping a bit as there are some other things that point to that ... The door said the XJ was manufactured 7/'92. I'm going back out there this weekend for more stuff. As far as I know the 35 looks just as stupid as it did in 84 as it does now. Lemon head. The axle you probably have is the chrysler 8.25 that appeared in 92 in jeeps that didn't have ABS. That axle is not worth a damn either in terms of being a c-clip with slightly smaller weaker shafts. Only the 97 and newer 8.25 rears are decent. The 8.25 has 3" tubes, the 35 has 2.5" tubes. The 44 has 2.75" tubes and has a point on the bottom like a diamond where as the 8.25 is flat. D-44s in jeeps newer than 89ish are rare if they exist at all. If it is a 44 they sell for 200 bucks all over the place if you can find them. Yards don't charge any different for them. There is no diff except the axle flage has a hole in it and 4 bults that hold the axle shafts in, you need to take the drums off to see if it is c-clipped or not, very easy to do and tell them apart.
