I'm the owner of one beaten up '87 XJ. I rescently bought an'89 for the amazingly low price of 150.00 (blessing i know). It is a nice rigg with power and its in good shape minus a locked up motor. I plan to pull the good runnin' motor from the beaten up '87 to put in the very nice '89. Now, what to do with the '87 chasis? My thoughts are ...build the locked up motor(if salvagable) jack it up and make a killer off-road vehicle of it. Her'es my question to ya'll on the list...Can i find a straight drive tranny for the 4.0 ? The only ones i've seen with straight drives are 2.5's or 2.8's i think? Did they make a straight drive for the 4.0? Will it work with the existing transfer case? Do any of you have such a straight drive tranny? Do you want to trade for an automatic? Or would anyone be interested in buyting my automatic in the future? Why a straight drive ? #! i llke 'em. #2 i learned to drive off road via straight drive, this jeeps only the second automatic 4wd i've had, the first being my wagoneer(sadly gone...weeping) and #3rdly- I like the control of a straight drive.......:) If anyone can help, please reply. I will have some picks of the new jeep soon! Joe Rice Mooresboro, NC ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Apr 2002 21:55:01 EST From: TEXONBEACH-at-aol.com Subject: xj: Crank sensor?? Hi- I seem to be experiencing the same type of dilemma that William Marin is going through. Checked everything he has, and I've had the crank position sensor replaced as well. For the most part my '87 Cherokee starts easily, rolls along happily. As it always has for all of the 283,000 miles that I've put on it. For the last 4 to 6 weeks though, at random intervals (every 100 miles or so) while at highway speed it will falter and splutter for a few seconds before smoothing out and rolling on till we get home. After and month of this behavior, I gave it to the mechanic much as W. Marin has. Seemed ok, but 2-3 days later it happened again except that now it has also started to falter and stall while sitting at intersections waiting for a green light. (Took 3 seperate tries to get it started last at a light on Wednesday-- on the way to inspection at DMV.) I say it starts easily for the most part because, as a secondary issue, the neutral safety switch is failing at random intervals when I try to start the Cherokee. Muttering and squeezing the button on the gear shift while sliding it from Park to Neutral and back seems to be an adequate if frustrating solution. Combine these two events, and you can see how I've been forced to drive a rickety 190E this weekend, but I can't tolerate that much longer. I am eager for anyone's advice.
