It comes and it goes...sometimes I won't hear it for a month then I'll hear it at least daily for a week. I'm pushing 125k on my engine and it's been doing it since I got it in '99 with 50k. I've thought about having the lifters replaced but I'm afraid that maybe it's messed up the cam and I'd rather not know...hoping to buy another XJ and making this one into a trail vehicle. I'd recommend a thicker oil... 10w30 might not be enough... are you sure it's the lifters/tappets? could be an injector or exhaust leak... or the rockers themselves... what oil are you running? As far as swapping an old Land Rover body on a US frame, tempting as that would be, I think I have enough projects in the fire without starting off on a new tangent...:) There's a pretty good LR contingent here in the Denver area (I met Bill Burke? last year and he does the LR off-road schools) and a few old non-running LR's around that could be picked up cheap I'm sure. Thanks for the help.... that didn't work itself, but it led me in the right direction....What I ended up doing was rebooting.... then when I got the blue boot screen, I have the choice of Linux, Failsafe or Floppy.... I went to Failsafe. Then I went to configuration, and at the "#sh" prompt, I typed "XFdrake --expert" which brought me to the video card properties....... Soo easy now that I know. It sounded like the head was starved for oil. I was told (on this list, I think) that this is just normal for that engine, and not a sign of any trouble. FYI, my '97 XJ 4.0. doesn't do that. Instead, it pings on regular gas.
