Why don't you just build that instead of going to all the trouble of swapping all the parts over to your 89? Do you have the same 242 t-case in your 89? Does the shift lever say 2Hi, N, 4Hi, and 4Low only, or have an additional selection? If it's what I detailed, it's a 231, but if it has an additional option, it's the 242. If you don't have all the identical equipment (t-case mainly) in your 89 as the donor 88, it won't necessarily be an easy swap unless you have access to a nice shop loaded with all the tools needed, including engine hoist and tranny jack. My daughter used to like her 242 t-case too for winter driving as she didn't have to shift into and out of 4wd, but I guess I prefer the simpler and stronger 231 where you know you're either in or out of 4wd as needed. I don't know where you're located, but I'd enlist the help and advice of a local jeep guy (from your list maybe?) who knows what he's doing to come and check out both rigs. If you're just having lifter noise from your current motor, you may be able to get away with just some upper end work instead of replacing the entire motor - way cheaper than all the swapping you're talking about. The donor rig for that price is great though, especially with the d44 rear. I have vacuum disconnects on all three of my xj d30's and don't really have any problem with them as long as you zip-tie the connecting ends to the axle pump and check the hoses for cracks occasionally. Body wise. It looks like it was used as a storage shed...It is the select trac 242 xfer case in the 88. I am in New Jersey, Bound Brook, and being originally from Texas, don't know a living soul around here. As NJ doesn't seem to be too 4 wheel friendly. On top of that, once I open my mouth and people hear the Southern accent, they tend to not be so friendly... I have seen a few jeeps, but only one that was lifted and made trail ready. I am sure there are a few guys on this list from the area, but I don't know any of them. Please don't take any offense if you are from this area! I really like it here! Weather is beautiful! And the beach...oooppps...the shore! Beautiful! Looking over the 88, I am going to buy it. I figure the swaps this way. OK I know I can probably get a few more miles out of mine. My son is 14, in Texas he can get his drivers license at 16. We are in NJ for about a year and a half. The plan is to give the XJ to my son. I know what it was like when I bought my first car. I can remember exploding rear ends and even have a fond (not so at the time) memory of burning up a trans sitting in the driveway! So I figure if I can get this stuff for 800 bucks and slowly work through it, I get two things. One I get to teach my son how to work on his own jeep. Two, I spend a little less money in the long run. Not to mention I end up with a whole engine drive train and stuff! Then I can start a new project! I have a daughter too! If you know anybody in the area, I would love to get together and talk jeep stuff! Mrs. he spends too much time on that jeep thing, would love to get to stop hearing about the stuff!
