Dave; I ended up getting the radiator for the BRAT (from the original post) from US Auto Parts in Gardena, CA. While probably not a GDI, the quality seems OK - everything lined up, holes in the right places, etc. - and it's working fine w/ no leaks. They had what was clearly the best deal; $96.16 delivered! A new rad. for an XJ will obviously be more, but FWIW they got it here fast and in good shape, at a terrific price. Don't have their web page bookmarked, but the phone on the receipt is 888/872-8866. Good luck! - - Joe Richardson Dave Markus wrote: >The phone number that Aaron posted is for GDI. Does anyone have the phone >number for Radiators Direct? If not, how about a state and city? Aaron, The 89 with the 242 t-case is most likly a 21 spline. The 242's typically didn't have 23 splines until the mid 90's. Bill If it was safe, it wouldn't be fun! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Sep 2002 21:50:44 -0600 From: "Aaron Storms" Subject: xj: Re: Re: Peugeot 5-speed replacement options? Thanks Bill, that's good news I think if my green 87xj with the Peugeot and np231 does indeed have the 21 splines - sure would make the swap a lot simpler! I wonder if my current wiring harness has the connectors to hook up to the AW4 ECM? My neighbor has an AX15 from a 90 wrangler that he'd give me if I want, but no t-case. Of course it's the 23 spline version I'd assume. I like the 5-speeds, but it seems like a pretty good time to make the switch to an auto if I'm ever going to do it for crawling. I also like what some have done by installing a Ford np435 granny-low 4spd manual tranny and t-case combo, but guess I'll try the auto first to see how I like it. Now that Troy has figured out how to do the manual 1st and 2nd gear selection switch and the new torque converter lockup, it should be a lot closer to the 5-speed performance. I'd still like to swap in a different kind of shifting lever though if possible, as the 1st and 2nd gear selection are currently in the same slot - not sure what options are available to do that, if at all. So, what do you think of the auto swap idea? At Penrose I saw how much easier it was for the auto guys to crawl up, stop, then continue without unloading the drivetrain as I was doing. My crawl ratio is so pitiful with the 4:11 gears and 36" tires that I need to do something about that too - maybe a KluneV? I heard that the Toy Marlin dual crawl boxes were really cheap compared to jeep stuff - any thoughts on that? The AtlasII is way out of my budget at this time. Until I can afford a tow rig and trailer, I'll be driving my xj to all the CO/UT trails, so prefer not to swap in a granny 4-speed without some sort of overdrive. Too bad we don't all have sponsors! Having done the late model TJ AX-15 Swap (mines out of a '99) I can say it's pretty easy even changing the Input gear of the T/C was a cinch. Only snag was the tranny mount, I simply modified the TJ mount to work on mine. I also took a YJ 4WD shifter and cut out the shift gates and made my own so now I have a reverse pattern shift throw with a detent for Neutral. ===== Rob "Lutin Plunder" Dome; A+, Network+ 1987 Jeep Cherokee Utility (mmm, forest service green) Dana30 - 4.0L - AX-15 - NP231 - Dana44 4.5" lift in front and 5.5" lift in the rear 31x9.50 SS TSL Radial's I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine - Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand __________________________________________________ Yahoo! - We Remember 9-11: A tribute to the more than 3,000 lives lost http://dir.remember.yahoo.com/tribute ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Sep 2002 01:56:24 -0600 From: "Aaron Storms" Subject: xj: Re: Re: Peugeot 5-speed replacement options? Rob, that sounds interesting and similar to my proposed project - any pics or write-up, or did you just take a Sat afternoon and whip that puppy in there? ...:) I'd bet that the xj auto t-case might even work pretty good since it's going to/from an xj. Unless you swapped out the t-case too, why did you need to do anything with the 4x4 lever? Or am I missing something? When the Peugeot BA-5 in my '87 XJ gave up, I had a local shop put in a Aisin AX-15. I think that you'll find that the consensus is that the Peugeot isn't a very good tranni and is expensive to fix/replace. I've been told that the AX-15 is a much better choice. The AX-15 was CLOSE to a drop in replacement. The 3 issues that come to mind are: 1. The cross-member that the tranni attaches to needs to be moved forward. 2. The exhaust pipe may need to be modified to keep it from rattling on the cross-member. Mine could use it, but I don't mind the rattle. 3. The linkage to the 4WD shift lever might need to be slightly tweaked. Mine did, though I'm not sure if that is because of the swap. I am very happy with the AX-15. > From: "Aaron Storms" > Subject: xj: Peugeot 5-speed replacement options? > > Looks like my green 87's Peugeot 5-speed may be giving up the ghost unless I... > > Any suggestions from you guys?
