At the Jeep/Chrysler dealership (where I am "parts man") I see this all the time. Many times a water pump goes on the car and requires removal before making it out of the bay do to reversed impeller, obvious leak, whining, or shaft coming out! I've also seen bad runs of pumps where we replace them 3-4 times (before leaving the shop) before finally giving up and going with a Crown Automotive pump. ( http://www.crownautomotive.net/ ) In fact, we stock the Crown product for retail jobs. Same warranty as Chrysler by the way. Last year we had a run on 94-96 fuel pumps. (Seems it must have been that "magic mileage" time like the 100,000 mile mark for small block Chevy timing chains.) We had many pump failures with the new pumps before they even got off the lift. It got so bad that one of our area dealers attached a message to all their listings on our "dealer connect" computer system that read "I WISH I WAS A FUEL PUMP SO I WOULDN'T HAVE TO WORK!!!!". The scary thing is, many of these are $500 pumps!! Price is also an issue. The only reason I buy parts at my dealership is that I get them at cost.....the sad thing is that I still find a better price on some items on the web! When to buy from the dealer? Only when you have no choice!!! Bob Loeb wrote: > > Today I had a leak at my Water Pump. I decided to go ahead and replace > the pump while I had it out to replace the gasket.
