Thanks to all who responded.
Of course, it does pop right off, but I didn't want to yank it too hard 
and find out it WASN'T supposed to pop right off ... ;-)
...the rest of the story?...
It wasn't in the column -ROFL (now, but not at 1am the other night)- it 
was just the stupid ignition switch itself.  Jammed up due to wear.  But 
an old spare SJ switch swapped in nicely.

I recall this being discussed on the XJ list a while back,
go to http://wagoneers.com  and look for the search tool, there
might be one that will just look at the XJ digests.  search on
shift kit and it should show up...
