I forget which "annual" Snohomish Snowy Hill climb contest this is... :) http://wagoneers.com/JEEPS/FESTS/Nov19-2003-SnowyHillClimb-Snohomish/ the blue xj is my son's friend Karl (he's selling the wilderness rack fwiw), the '81 wagoneer is my son's, and the gold '87 xj is mine. The FSJ took the first run, didn't make it... the blue xj made several runs, didn't make it... :) then Dad fired up "mom's" Jeep and made it to the top and around on the FIRST attempt... that inspired mr. blue xj to continue making runs... with the help of my son as spotter and ballast they eventually made it up... my son claimed that my jeep made it because of the tires... I don't buy it... but I didn't have a chance to make the attempt in the blue xj... they left and haven't been back since... ;) more snow is expected... :) too bad my ASD isn't working on the '91 300d... sure would be interesting to see if it would make it... probably not... john - -- - ------------------------------------------------------------------ john at http://wagoneers.com from Snohomish,WA- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... reminding you not to leave life w/o Jesus! - ------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Nov 2003 05:34:07 -0600 From: "Mike Petersen" Subject: Re: xj: Re: refresher on 4.0L sensors and such... John, Your problem sounds a little like what I had. Wait until almost dark and start the jeep up and take a hose and lightly spray down the plug wires and cap. Look for arcing between one of the wires and the block. One of my XJ's had that rough idle thing and it turned out to be a lot of oil in the air cleaner caused by the skinny plastic tube from the back of the valve cover to the cleaner box being totally clogged with crap. A little slovent and a blow out with the air hose and a new flter element fixed it. - -Don Hansen Braintree, MA. fixxa-at-beld.net 1995 XJ Sport "Henry" 1998 GMC Jimmy SLT 1988 Grand Wagoneer "Edna" 1987 Jeep J-20 Pickup "Miss Agnes" (Retired) 1989 MJ Comanche Pickup (2WD) "Martha" 1988 XJ (Retired, but coming back!) - ----- Original Message ----- From: "john meister" To: ; "curtis" Sent: Thursday, November 20, 2003 3:53 AM Subject: Re: xj: Re: refresher on 4.0L sensors and such... > replaced the o-rings, one injector, cleaned the TPS and idle controller > motor... > found the vacuum line to the map was broken at the base of the throttle > body... > > plugs look ok (the three I checked) only 6 months old, installed new cap > and rotor. > > Started right up, idled correctly, but upon throttle it kind of has a > miss... a shudder... > occassionally it'll shudder a bit at idle, not consistently.... > > when I activate the throttle it feels like it's hitting back... there > is a slight chance > I got a wire crossed... I ran a test the first year ('96/'97) The '81 FSJ called Old Blue won hands down. The '88 XJ known as the little wagoneer lost... (with the tires that are now on my current XJ I believe!). The FSJ had the NP219 Quadratrac and 235's, marginal studded snows, but weighed in at 5,200lbs and was well balanced. The XJ had the NP242 selectrac and 31's (I think), michelin LTX's, only weighed in around 3,500lbs. This year the FSJ was also an '81 but had the NP208 (command trac) and some sort of less slob (les schwab) tires, open country or something like that, can look...) not sure of the weight, but it'll be around 4,800lbs as it doesn't have all the options of Old Blue. The XJ is an '87 with an np207 (command trac) running the 31" michelin LTX's. I think the difference was I hit the hill as fast as I could in 4wd high, when I hit the bump in the center of the hill I was kind of tossed up and to the right, landed at a 45 degree angle (slid sideways) toward the opening in the fence at the top, kept the power on, turned the wheel left and right without backing off and clawed my way through... When my son hit the bump he backed off the gas, his nose slid toward the downhill side toward my neighbors's fence... :) If he had stayed on the power at the bump he might have positioned himself the same way... The '89 blue XJ ended up in a similiar position to my '87, but they got off the gas at the bump and got stuck... but eventually walked it through the tough spot and made it over... :) The SJ's are more balanced then the XJ's. XJ's typically have about 2,500lbs on the front axle and 1,000lbs on the rear. The extra weight of the SJ sits on the back axle, that makes all the difference in the world. :) I should have tested the SJ... it would have answered a few questions. In years past my SJ's have won the battle of the hill... :) But alas, more snow cometh to Snohomish... this looks like a good year for Jeepin'. :) Too bad SuperDawg won't be able to join the party... :( john Ray Drouillard wrote: >How does the XJ and SJ compare in the snow?
