I bought an '89 wad Comanche for $400 and an '87 donor wad Cherokee for $700. The Comanche ran great (after hooking the correct plug wires to the correct plugs) but the transmission shifted only occasionally. I drove the Cherokee for a couple of hundred miles before parting it out, and everything worked fine. I pulled the wad tyranny out of the Comanche, replaced the seals in the wad tyranny and xfer case, and installed them in the Comanche. On the first run the tranny shifted fine for the first mile or so. As it warmed up it started to drop in and out of all gears except 1st (reverse also worked at all times). By the time I got home (about 3 miles) it wouldn't up shift at all. At some point it dawned on me that the 2wd tranny behaved the same way and there probably was nothing wrong with it. Anyway, I've checked all connections and have replaced the yellow module behind the dash on the right side, and the silver box behind the dash on the right side. Tonight, if I can face the cold shop, I'll change the main brain hidden way up in the dash to the right of the steering column. Hope it will work in the '89. I have it up on jack stands so I can run in gear and watch it shift. I did wiggle a few wires and saw no change. Anyone have any ideas? Sounds like I should throw a bunch of sandbags in the back of my 86 2dr XJ when it snows again. Heh. That and it's a running (believe it or not) 2.5L tbi (2wd unfortunally) rebuilt and bored .030 over. So, it probably weighs quite a lot less than some of the other XJ's on the road today. - -Dan Johnson - --- john meister wrote: > The SJ's are more balanced then the XJ's. The old 3 wire just does neutral and backup lights, but the newer 5 wire tells the computer what gear the tranny's supposed to be in. Did you change the switches with the trans or leave to old one on?? - -Don Hansen Braintree, MA. fixxa-at-beld.net 1995 XJ Cherokee Sport "Henry" 1998 GMC Jimmy SLT 1988 Grand Wagoneer "Edna" 1987 Jeep J-20 Pickup "Miss Agnes" (Retired) 1989 MJ Comanche Pickup (2WD) "Martha" 1988 XJ (Retired, but coming back!) - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Don George" To: "Jeep" Sent: Friday, November 21, 2003 8:26 PM Subject: xj: Shiftless AW4 > Got a problem your collective wisdom may be able to help me with. Guy at my local gear shop recommends using 30 weight motor oil in the AX-15 instead of Gear Lube. He says that it'll shift easier, run cooler, and last longer. What's the conventional list wisdom on this? ------------------------------ End of xj-digest V1 #1735 *************************
