Looked at a 2nd Jeep... it looks nice, but in the WJ realm it has a couple of strikes against it, which means I can almost afford it. :) It's got the I-6 instead of the 4.7L V8... it's the Laredo and it's got 125,000 miles on it... hmmm... that's three strikes isn't it? Could this be a sign? ;) Also, the same mileage that the '96 XJ I drove today that sprung a leak... wonder what will happen on the test drive with the '99 WJ... The other sign that the '96 xj wasn't for me is that the wife told me I'd be driving the old Jeep... :) Let's see, do I want to drive a '91 300d or an '87 cherokee... hmmm.... depends on if it's snowing or if I have to pull a trailer... ;) Actually the '87 is pretty amazing... 247,000 miles on the original engine/trans, gets around 16 in town and over 21 on the highway with 31" tires and 3" of lift... it's tired, but it's doing quite well... one would think it had a Mercedes Diesel engine in it already as long as that 4.0L has gone... :) The 300d is doing fine... but I found out that if you leave the rear window defroster on, charge your cell phone, listen to the stereo and play with the electric windows and sunroof for just over an hour in 40 degree weather that your 2.5L Diesel probably won't start on it's own without a jump... oops. :) Didn't realize my wife had been shopping for that long... she shouldn't leave me unsupervised for that long... (neither should she let me in costco by myself... but that's another story. ;) It's funny how the older I get the more supervision I require. ;) Oh, as far as the 3.0L Diesel transplant into my XJ, it's closer to reality then ever before... it looks like I'm going to buy a friend's 300D, we just have to figure out how to get it off the pennisula and over here before the tabs expire... I'm waiting to see if the car is worth putting together as a daily driver, using it on a Wagoneer chassis or just parting it out and keeping the engine for my Jeep. :) The engineering challenge isn't terrifying... will need an adapter to mate the Aisin Warner AW4 to the 3.0L... not sure if the flex plate on the 3.0L will work or not... the other issue with the AW4 is computer controlled... I've got a schematic for a manual override... Fitting the 3.0L into the XJ bay will be a no-brainer. Connecting the exhaust will be a little bit involved since the exhaust on the XJ dumps on the driver's side, last I looked the turbo lived on the pass side... oh well, that's why Airport Welding located at the bottom of the hill from me... :) If I can trade the Benz for the '99 WJ, get the 300D working until my J10 is finished then I can drive either the '87 XJ or the 300d until the J10 is done, then pull the '87 XJ off line and switch it to the Diesel... sounds like it might work out... not in a hurry... not a lot of bucks tied up either... :) Stay tuned... who knows what else I'll think up before the next digest rolls out... :) I'm thinking that the used car lot will not give me a fair trade on my mercedes and I won't get the WJ... but I do plan on dragging the other 300d home, whether I part it or make it a driver remains to be seen... One thing is certain though, the '87 XJ ain't going anywhere any time soon... BTW, anyone in the Seattle area have a good XJ driver's side seat? Need one for the '87 cherokee... later, john - -- ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** john-at-wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold. ** trust Jesus ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- The revolt is underway, the penguin is coming... They punch in the VIN# and it gives them the list of equipment options that came on that vehicle...though it DOESN'T account for dealer installed options. It is detailed enough to even tell you how many gallons of gas your vehicle was supplied with, though I don't quite understand why anyone would need to know that... I can't speak for ALL dealers, but if someone asks me (calls or stops in the parts dept.) I'm always happy to look up their vehicle for them and give them a printout. I'm planning on selling my '91 300d and getting another XJ, or if I can find a cheap enough WJ... anyway, if I sell my benz and get a good deal on a nice XJ I'll give serious thought to installing one of the detroit Electrax, if they have 'em for the 35. I bought one for my J10 stepside but it's not installed yet...I put a dana 44 rear end in my '83 J10... I may buy another one for the front axle too... we'll see how the job situation progresses past january... the Lord has provided so far... :) it's 32 degrees out... I may be driving the '87 xj to work tomorrow... :) Hey, anyone in the Seattle are know where I can get a set of front seats for my Cherokee? I test drove a '96 Country that had some really nice seats... :) john Steven Loe wrote: > > --- john meister wrote: > ...the factory trac lok only lasts about 20k or so... > > > Does this mean that even if I find a XJ with Trac Lok, > that I'll have to put new clutch packs in it every 25k > miles? Thanks Bob, This is a great help! I'll see if I can find a Chrysler dealer in Colorado who is as nice as you are... Thx!
