I've noticed that Diesel is more here in Washington state because of additional taxes placed on Diesel... Anyway, I ran a spreadsheet... check out 16mpg (like in my '87 XJ) vs. the 26mpg that I got with my 300SD/300d's in town: 16 12.50 $19.38 $32.16 $12.8 26 7.69 $11.92 $19.79 $7.9 For 200 miles traveled the XJ uses 12.5 gallons at $1.55/gal while the 300 series used only 7.69 gallons at $1.66/gal. That means that driving my XJ 200 miles cost $19.38 while driving a Mercedes Disesl cost $19.79 for the SAME distance!!! Wait a minute, you mean to tell me that it costs me MORE to drive a vehicle that pollutes less, is more efficient and all that??? If the XJ drops to 15 and the 300d goes up to 30mpg then I'm only saving about $3.00 in 200 miles... but in cold weather my '91 has dropped to 26mpg, the XJ is holding it's own at 16. In the summer my 300d seems closer to 29 to 30mpg... While regular unleaded has dropped in price around here, Diesel remains up there... Am I doing this math right? :) john miles traveled cost/gal mpg 200 $1.55 $1.66 delta 15 13.33 $20.67 $34.31 $13.6 16 12.50 $19.38 $32.16 $12.8 17 11.76 $18.24 $30.27 $12.0 18 11.11 $17.22 $28.59 $11.4 19 10.53 $16.32 $27.08 $10.8 20 10.00 $15.50 $25.73 $10.2 21 9.52 $14.76 $24.50 $9.7 22 9.09 $14.09 $23.39 $9.3 23 8.70 $13.48 $22.37 $8.9 24 8.33 $12.92 $21.44 $8.5 25 8.00 $12.40 $20.58 $8.2 26 7.69 $11.92 $19.79 $7.9 27 7.41 $11.48 $19.06 $7.6 28 7.14 $11.07 $18.38 $7.3 29 6.90 $10.69 $17.74 $7.1 30 6.67 $10.33 $17.15 $6.8 31 6.45 $10.00 $16.60 $6.6 ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://wagoneers.com ** ** http://freegift.net ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Dec 2003 15:34:08 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: xj: oops - error in spreadsheet... Heh heh.... While John's indecisiveness about "the Benz" may be a wee bit repetitive, I think anything that distracts him away from the "Maybe I should sell the little gold XJ...." kick is a good thing! After all those miles (and still lookin' so good!) that old soldier has earned the right to a permanent home! barbierij-at-optonline.net wrote: > > John, > > Keep the benz or sell it. But just think how much better it would be if you put the Benz motor into the XJ.... The torque and efficiency of the diesel in a chassis (the XJ) MUCH lighter (I believe) than the Mercedes You'd probably average 35 or maybe more :) Sean B.
