The only issue it seems to have is that the transfer case is pretty noisy, it goes into 4WD, but the dash light doesn't come on. It also doesn't come out of 4WD easily: You have to stop and back up a few feet. Am I looking at big trouble here? Maybe there's some linkage ajustment?? The rest of the car is in great shape with 125k on the clock. I'm wondering if the PO didn't use 4WD much and things are just tight. Case fluid was changed with no nasty metal bits in the old juice. On mine there is a set of lines running from t-case to axle and they seem to control the dash light and how fast it came out of 4wd. My Jeep also had 4 new tires three bought new, and one the never before used spare tire. That tire had size in common with the other three but that was it. Reconnected Lines bought a fourth matched tire and it drove like new, what the dealer and previous owner didn't know just made it cheaper for me to buy. On my current Jeep it has Select-track and the special joint in the front axle is a little worn, since it is always turning it creates a little vibration that increases with speed, becomes a noticeable rumble at 70-75. Thought I would throw that part in incase it helps. On the Select-Track there also appears to be no vacuum lines and no hubs in the front axle. Hope that helps. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Don Hansen" To: Cc: "FXJ" Sent: Saturday, February 07, 2004 6:39 AM Subject: xj: Xfer case question > I just got a 96 XJ for my daughter. Check the reservoir ball behind the front bumper on the passenger side to see if the two lines are intact, then trace them back to the engine department and check for cracks or breaks, easily fixed by a little length of rubber vacuum hose from an auto parts store. Check the plug on the back of the t-case and again trace it forward to the engine department - may just have come loose at the plug. Does your heater work other than just defrost? If only the defrost works, you definitely have a vacuum leak. The 4wd light bulb on the dash could just be burned out, but that's not very likely. If the light were working at all and the vacuum was just weak, the light often goes out when accelerating while in 4wd as the vacuum is going elsewhere. On the t-case, that's a pretty common scenario to get it to disengage. In fact, I've heard on most makes of trucks with 4wd, that it's always a good idea to disengage and back up a few feet to ensure disengagement before heading out on a long highway trip. This had happened to our Suburban and the previous owner and he ruined the t-case on a trip from TX to CO in the winter... Changing the switch on mine got the 4wd light to work again. I traced all of my lines at the time & found no leaks. You may want to consider checking the vacuum switch as well... The 96 doesn't have the front axle disconnect--they got rid of that around 1990, IIRC. My 89 has it and the case won't go into 4WD until it gets a vac. signal from the axle. - -Don - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jason" To: Sent: Saturday, February 07, 2004 9:22 AM Subject: xj: Re: Xfer case question > On my 87 when I bought it, it had similar issues with command track, turned > out to be two things, vacuum lines and tires that were not matched both > easily fixed.
