There are two kinds of filters - Depth and Surface. Most of the filters that folks use (paper, foam) are depth filters. These remove the dirt by entrapment in the filter media. Dirt removal effeciency is a function of the filter media's pore size. Flow rate capacity is a function of surface area, is at its maximum when the filter is new and drops off constantly. The K&N filter is a surface filter. The filter media is a substrate for the dirt to accumulate on and the accumulated dirt itself is the filter media. The surface filter will maintain its maxium flowrate capacity for a longer time than a depth filter. Now, to translate this into something more useful... The depth filter will generally plug faster but filter dirt more predictably. The surface filter will tend to pass some dirt through when the substrate is clean but has a greater loading capacity over the longterm. For my kind of usage, the K&N filter made sense. For you though in the ME, a depth filter could be better though. Can you get ahold of Amsoil filters there or perhaps order them and have them shipped? Sometime ago, we had a NOR person that was a sand dune monster in California. It's based on his experiences why I have the thought that an Amsoil or similar technology depth filter would be better. The Amsoil is constructed of several layers of different grades of foam and will hold a ton of dirt. When plugged with sand, you can do a quick cleaning on the trail just by banging it. I could see that if you go with a conventional depth filter via conventional air box, cone intake or snorkle, it would be very beneficial to rig up a foam prefilter somewhere. I am done rattling! Maybe this can trigger some other ideas and some better ones too! LOL! Taken from Nissan offroad! Strategic . Innovative . Which one would you guys suggest? Never heard of Miyota, do tell more. I wouldn't recommend a K&N to my worst enemy. They are overpriced, provide poor filtration, and are a pain to clean. I'd recommend the AMSOIL air filter if you can get one. > > What about the K&n Fuel Injection Performance Kit Gen2? Good aditiion? I distrust anything from K&N... they have a great marketing deptartment though. But you're paying for it. I've looked at the Airraid airfilter setups, they cost less, problem is they still look like the same kind of filter technology that k&N uses... If you get one of them, or the K&N I've seen a new add-on for the k&N that makes sense, it's called a dry sleeve... basically it should provide you with better filtration. I use amsoil filter material to wrap a K&N so I can clean it rather then the k&N and I protect my engine. You could use one of those foam air filter setups for a furnance and put oil on it, that way you'd get the air flow but protect your engine. john > > Strategic . Innovative .
