That's a good trick Ed - I've had to replace nearly every single power steering pump and/or seal on my eight xj's over the year. It's kind of an xj trademark on the trail to hear the whining power steering pump...:) I had been buying my seal kits from the dealer since they have three different seals that should be replaced for about $15. I don't remember now if they leaked anytime after that of if it was always a different jeep! Aaron - -----Original Message----- From: Ed Kummel Sent: Oct 15, 2004 3:06 PM To: xj-at-digest.net Subject: Re: xj: Re: Cherokee woes.. I didn't see the original post, so forgive me if this answer is irrelivant. On my 1990 Wagoneer LTD, it leaked powersteering fluid like a sieve. I took the pump off and found that the reservoir is not a physical part of the pump. The plastic reservoir has a plastic tube that pokes into the pump and the pump and reservoir are held together with clamps. Removing the reservoir revealed an O-ring that was sealing the mating surface between the pump and the reservoir. This O-ring had deteriorated and was no longer making a valid seal. I replaced it with what I thought was the same size ring and that leaked too...seems that through age, the metal clamps that holds the pump and reservoir together suffered from fatigue and stretched a little. Just enough to not seal. So, I got the same diameter O-ring, but thicker (careful not to go beyond the mating receptical on the pump) Stacking two rings on the reservoir fixed my problem...the pump no longer leaks and it's been fine for the last 5 years... I hope this helps. I'd seriously suggest following the 30,60& 90 maintenance recommendations. You might also consider using synthetic lubricants to reduce the amount of wear and time required to maintain... amsoil for instance has extended drain intervals for all their fluids, others are starting to do that too. john On Fri, 15 Oct 2004, Lenny Nichols wrote: >-->I'm now at 120,00 miles on my 1999 XJ.
