Well, the GC has rolled 211K miles, and I'm still on the original engine AND transmission. A transmission mechanic neighbor who happens to work for Chrysler/Corporate told me about the "brake fluid" trick to address the transmission slippage. The trick? Add not a drop more than 2 ounces of brake fluid to the transmission fluid. One of the chemicals in the brake fluid will swell the seals in the transmission and virtually eliminate the slippage. Since doing this, I've gotten an additional 41K miles out of the original transmission. Can't beat that with a stick..... I'm kind of a visually oriented ADD type. :) I think this cured me. This 85 XJ (jag type) is sitting on a shortened '74 chevy pickup chassis. It's done pretty well, but there are just somethings that don't work well... So, at this point I plan to fix the '83 300D I just brought home and sell it... it's in nice shape, hopefully it's not going to require a lot. The Dept. of Licensing tried to tax me on $3,000 as that's the lowest price they claim it's worth... Also going to sell the '83 GMC Jimmy 6.2L Diesel and the '75 J10 hydraulic dump bed trailer... along with some antiques, one of my laptops, and other stuff... want to pay off the WJ. Also need to raise some bucks for the SuperDawg project. Let me know if you're interested in any of this stuff off list... lots of technical books I need to sell too... (software engineering & electronics). So, it looks like the final score will be one '99 WJ (4.0L), one '91 300d(2.5L) and one '83 J10 (4.0L) stepside... I'll be looking for a Bri-Mar dump trailer or build another hydraulic dump trailer later... later, john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://wagoneers.com ** ** http://freegift.net ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 06 Nov 2004 19:11:00 -0800 From: john meister Subject: Re: xj: Brands amsoil makes all of this, except possibly for the power steering fluid... but I think the problem is you're not in the states or canada so it's really hard to get it... so in that case kendell, castrol or mobil 1 would all be suitable products. john Boney Varghese wrote: > What are the best brands for > > > > * Antifreeze > > * Differential oil > > * Power steering fluid > > * Transmission fluid - Mobil 1? > > * Engine Oil - Mobil 1? > > > > And are there any differences in the bands? > > Any particular contents you should be looking for when making the selection? > > > > Cheers > > > > Boney Varghese > > Ph: +971 4 335 2419 > > Fx: +971 4 335 2419 > > Mob: +971 50 545 0436 > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-xj-at-digest.net [mailto:owner-xj-at-digest.net] On Behalf Of Boney > Varghese > Sent: Friday, October 29, 2004 10:36 PM > To: xj-at-digest.net > Subject: RE: xj: Over the hill > > > > My engines a 6cyl 4.0 and pretty much stock! > > > > Cheers > > > > Boney Varghese > > Ph: +971 4 335 2419 > > Fx: +971 4 335 2419 > > Mob: +971 50 545 0436 > > -----Original Message----- > > From: owner-xj-at-digest.net [mailto:owner-xj-at-digest.net] On Behalf Of john > > Sent: Friday, October 29, 2004 8:46 PM > > To: Boney Varghese > > Cc: xj-list > > Subject: RE: xj: Over the hill > > > > On Fri, 29 Oct 2004, Boney Varghese wrote: > > > > >>--> > > >>-->And this same XJ find it hard to climb the pavement without changing it > > > into > > >>-->4lo. > > > > > huh? > > > > >>-->Are the gears weak? > > > > > what engine do you have? 4.0L?? > > transmission? > > > > > > maybe a picture of this "obstacle" would help... > > > > is the overall performance ok? if not you might have a clogged catalytic > > converter... > > > > > > >>-->I've seen a land cruiser zip onto the pavement at 20kmph without any > > >>-->problems and without having to stop and crawl... is that normal? > > >>--> > > >>-->I just switched over to Mobil 1 and I feel quite an improvement overall > > > > > aha! see, ALL your problems would have been solved had you been able > > to switch to amsoil. ;) > > > > john > > > > >>--> > > >>-->Cheers > > >>--> > > >>-->Boney Varghese > > >>-->Ph: +971 4 335 2419 > > >>-->Fx: +971 4 335 2419 > > >>-->Mob: +971 50 545 0436 > > >>-->-----Original Message----- > > >>-->From: owner-xj-at-digest.net [mailto:owner-xj-at-digest.net] On Behalf Of john > > >>-->Sent: Friday, October 29, 2004 6:54 PM > > >>-->To: xj-at-digest.net > > >>-->Subject: RE: xj: Over the hill > > >>--> > > >>-->On Fri, 29 Oct 2004, Boney Varghese wrote: > > >>--> > > >>-->>-->Thanks John > > >>-->>--> > > >>-->>-->I'll keep that in mind! > > >>-->>--> > > >>-->>-->My rear wheels do spin sometime when I accelerate and the whole xj > > >>-->shakes > > >>-->>-->before it grips the road and moves ahead... gear problem.. or axle > > > hop? > > >>--> > > >>-->sounds normal... get traction. :) > > >>--> > > >>-->>--> > > >>-->>-->BW how much has you XJ run? > > >>--> > > >>-->? how many miles? last I heard it's around 263,000 miles. > > >>-->it's my son's now... > > >>--> > > >>-->john > > >>--> > > >>-->>--> > > >>-->>-->Cheers > > >>-->>--> > > >>-->>-->Boney Varghese > > >>-->>-->Ph: +971 4 335 2419 > > >>-->>-->Fx: +971 4 335 2419 > > >>-->>-->Mob: +971 50 545 0436 > > >>-->>--> > > >>-->>-->-----Original Message----- > > >>-->>-->From: owner-xj-at-digest.net [mailto:owner-xj-at-digest.net] On Behalf Of > > > john > > >>-->>-->Sent: Friday, October 29, 2004 6:39 PM > > >>-->>-->To: xj-at-digest.net > > >>-->>-->Cc: incubus-at-emirates.net.ae > > >>-->>-->Subject: Re: xj: Over the hill > > >>-->>--> > > >>-->>-->only 161,000 miles? > > >>-->>--> > > >>-->>-->does your front driveshaft disconnect or spin all the time? > > >>-->>-->you want to check the double cardan joing by the xfr case > > >>-->>-->and of course by the front axle. otherwise normal oil changes > > >>-->>-->and a check of bearings and such is all you need. > > >>-->>--> > > >>-->>-->my '87 xj is down with my son in Arizona... it has over 260,000 > > >>-->>-->miles on it and doing well. > > >>-->>--> > > >>-->>-->I've had three or four xj's with over 200,000 miles on them without > > >>-->>-->trouble.
