Usually they rust up (I take them off and lube them, plus check the diaphram)). I would get a cable for accessory equipment for a big truck and replace the vacuum one with that if you can't get it working. AMC EAgles also used them. From: Wayne E LaMothe Subject: xj: xfer case shift motor Well, since it snowed the other night going home from work I figured what better time to see how the selec trac works in the 85 wagoneer. It doesn't! I had the tranny and xfer case rebuilt and had not installed the front driveshaft until a few days ago. I thought the garage that did the rebuild would have made sure it all worked. Got to spend some time on it yesterday and there is vacuum to the shift motor but the motor does not pull the arm on the xfer case to put it in 4wd. This Jeep does not have the axle shift motor but one next to the xfer case. I am buying a vacuum pump today to test the motor assy as I could not tell if the system was supplying enough vacuum to the motor to make it operate correctly. The shift motor is not available on the aftermarket and Jeep dealer says a few are still in inventory for a horrendous price. So, two questions: 1.) It seems to me that I should be able to remove the linkage to the shift motor and pull the arm on the xfer case forward manually and leave it there to engage the 4wd. Since this is a part time/full time system the maual says it will not harm the system to run it in 4wd for extended periods of time. I really just want to make sure the xfer case works correctly. I live at the top of a good sized mountain and 4wd is necessary to make it home when the white stuff flies. Will the lever on the Tcase stay forward on it's own or does it have to be tied off? 2.) the dealer says the shift motor was used on all selec trac systems from 84 to 91, including the Grand Wagoneers. Does anyone have a good shift motor they want to get rid off? Thanks Wayne ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Nov 2004 00:59:32 -0800 From: "Jim Blair" Subject: xj: Re: one tough vehicle... I wonder if it will bolt right in in place of the >-->current diff. Hmmmm the system uses sensors on each wheel, a $480 computer by the battery, a solenoid under the rear seat that locks up the limited slip rear diff... I'm going to put a switch in place to allow me to lock up the rear end under my control. Snow? I'm jealous... but only slightly... was walking around in a long sleeve shirt all day... we only had a little bit of rain. ;) I think netscape weather has reported 52 degrees and light rain for over a week now... don't tell them that the sun came out for a few hours yesterday and today... ;) I don't think we're expecting much in the way of snow this year... :( just our usual rain, and I can't remember if we're getting more or less this year... all I heard was not much in the way of snow... Anyway, if you wanted such a system all you need to do is rob the rear end out of a wrecked 4matic vehicle... and, while I haven't looked into it, I would think you could get the entire system including the xfr case... I would think the gear ratio of the gasser will be different, probably make your Diesel a bolt of lightening off the line... :) I wonder how hard it would be to change the ring and pinion in a benz? Randy's ring & pinion would be the first folks I would call to check. I bought my Detroit Electrax for SuperDawg there... it's the new truetrac setup with an electric locker feature... I had a truetrac in my '88 xj, pretty impressive system, much better than a trac lock limited slip, but not as "positive" as a true locker. I had a very bad experience with real lockers... very poor street manners... and while driving like an idiot the locker produced so much understeer that I removed one tree from existence. :) Off road lockers are incredible... I was driving up waterfalls and rocks like they were a lane on the freeway. If I were going to build a mixed used 4x4 it would have either the electrax or the ARB air lockers... nothing like a locker on the trail... but for the street... not for me. >-->How are you making out with the diesel conversion ideas. I'll look at the pix later, still in Linux shell... (viruses and worms aren't an issue here... this is my happy place. ;) Diesel plans remain centered on my '91 300D and of course the '83 Jimmy. Going to finish fixing the Jimmy and put it for adoption along with the '83 300D I picked up. Going to keep my '91 300d and wait for my J10 to go with the 4.0L I already have. So, at this point the '83 J10 is getting the '96 XJ 4.0L HO setup. I researched it pretty well 4 years ago, and basically repeated the exercise again with a slightly new batch of friends... some of the popcorn crowd has been there before. ;) I think the 4.0L with 4.10 gears, the Aisin Warner 4 speed auto, and the NP219 (Quadratrac) will be a good setup... quiet, fast and should be able to tow my overweight trailer... and we're hoping for decent fuel economy. With the 4.2L carb/T5/3.31s I got close to 19mpg... 16mpg typically in town... with the 4.0L we hope to see higher numbers. I got to drive the 6.2L Diesel around a bit yesterday hauling trees and topsoil and while I didn't dislike it, it sure was nice to get back into my Mercedes Diesel afterwards and have a quieter performing vehicle... Driving my wife's '99 WJ with the 4.0L, which weighs in pretty close to my '83 J10, save about three hundred pounds, does quite well with it's 3.73 gears. That same engine with 4.10 gears in the J10 should do quite well. Remember too that when I made this decision originally, back in Spring of aught one (grin) I had tested the theory by pulling my then 1,200 lb trailer behind my then functioning '88 XJ with a 4.0L and 4.10 gears. >-->Have a good day - >-->Fred will do, thanx. john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://wagoneers.com ** ** http://freegift.net ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of xj-digest V1 #1959 *************************
