Front is a D30 and rear is D35 or D44 (oval or stop sign shaped cover unless he has a rare Model 20 round basketball cover) Complete diffs aren't hard to come by either. The SNORT4x4.com forum is a constant source of local spare parts for me! In Seattle, I go to Drivelines Northwest to get yokes for the style of axle I'm running with the fasteners in the style I want. From: Gary Subject: xj: My sons never ending drive shaft problem John, Need some help here. My sons XJ has dropped his drive shaft twice in the last two weeks. The bolt was sheared on on of the straps which I was able to extract the old bolt without damage to the threads. I haven't seen what he just did as he is being towed back from Hassiampa wash as I write this. Can we install U bolts instead of the straps? Someone told me that he needs something different on the rear end do you know? Your assistance is much appreciated ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Jan 2005 18:58:16 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: Re: xj: My sons never ending drive shaft problem On Sat, 1 Jan 2005, Gary wrote: >-->John, >--> >-->Need some help here. Someone told >-->me that he needs something different on the rear end do you know? >-->Your assistance is much appreciated why does it have to be towed? simply pull the driveshaft off the front and drive it... I've seen the straps replaced with u-bolts, but there is the issue of clearance... the top of the driveshaft is a CV (double cardan) setup. The real question is why is he dropping his driveshaft??? I've had a LOT of 4x4s and have never dropped a driveshaft... is this thing lifted??? if so how much? Did he correct the driveshaft angles? On the front shaft you have the option of lowering the case or having the front axle rotated to offset the lift... most 4x4 shops should be able to make a good recommendation on this as it's not unchartered territory. BTW, which son are we talking about? :) I can't place the name and email right now... sorry... also, what Jim Blair suggested on using an "EZ out" sounds reasonable... I'm guessing that this bolt is in the output shaft of the xfr case... the bolt should be softer than the casting... if you did damage the threads you could tap it larger and use new bolts... I would recommend using the stock straps and figuring out why this is failing... and make sure he packs the correct sized wrench to remove the bolts from the axle end. ;) ttyl, john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://wagoneers.com ** ** http://freegift.net ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 01 Jan 2005 21:24:27 -0700 From: Gary Subject: Re: xj: My sons never ending drive shaft problem John, The XJ is a 2wd in transition. a few months ago I installed the 4wd trans w/transfercase and he is in the process of putting new bushings on the front axel. But we havent installed it yet.Yes it is lifted, I believe it is a 5 inch procomp so that could be why. The straps were intacked tonight so the caps wiggled out somehow...... I set him up on azvjc and this is my email . His name is Kyle and my only son. Two weeks ago I was able to drill the bolt and us a cold chisle to reverse it out. I has the stock straps and I think we probably need to go with Ubolts. Your knowledge is much appreciated. john wrote: >On Sat, 1 Jan 2005, Gary wrote: > > >>-->John, >>--> >>-->Need some help here.
