I'm having a little trouble getting my tilt column back together in my '86 Jeep Cherokee. I always have had challenges with the tilt columns... seems that when I finish something doesn't work, you know, wheel lock, turn signals, something... then I tear it apart and finally get it. The top two bolts on this column were completely out. :) This time I've been very careful not to misplace pieces or break anything... But for some reason this one spring is giving me fits. The shop manual(s)(both the MR244 & MR256 factory XJ / SJ) don't go into a lot of detail... This picture: http://wagoneers.com/XJ/tech/XJ-tilt-column/tiltcolumn-spring.jpg shows the issue. If I put the end of the spring into the slot, as shown in the factory manual, and I carefully slide the column sleeve over and then test it with a key turn I hear a "ka-chunk" and open it back up to see this. http://wagoneers.com/XJ/tech/XJ-tilt-column/ more pix (also a shot of a new amsoil cone type air filter once I get my XJ back together will test it out... looks like it'll fit on teh 4.0L as well!) Anyway, this is at least the third tilt column I've done, this is the first time that THIS spring has given me grief. I hate fixing tilt columns. :) Rube Goldberg must have had a week off from the Mercedes Benz climate control group and went over to GM/Jeep to "help" out. ;) So, all that said, what am I doing wrong??? any pictures of how it should look? OH, btw, here's the SJ version: http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/tech/Tilt-Column-Repair/P1010004.JPG http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/tech/Tilt-Column-Repair/ more pix thanx, john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Apr 2005 00:57:05 -0400 (EDT) From: john Subject: xj: Re: fsj: Automatic Transmission Dimensions - TCI Automotive cool website, thanx Jim! http://www.tciauto.com/tech_info/trans_dims.htm john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Apr 2005 23:06:48 -0700 (PDT) From: Ed Kummel Subject: Re: xj: Re: this spring is kicking my backside... You do not have to take the entire collumn apart to fix a wobbly tilt steering system. Here is what I did when I fixed mine. I took off only the stuff up to the turnsignal section. Unplug the harness from under the dash and pulled the turn signal plastics out of the way. Looking at the collumn, you can see two holes that run all the way into the collumn. Actuate the tilt system and you will see one of the bolts that you need to tighten. slide the socket down the hole and unscrew the bolt. Remove the bolt and replace it, but not before you put a little Locktite 271 on the threads (I think it's 271..) actuate the tilt mechanism again and you will see the other bolt (I think that there are more, but you really don't need to tighten those if you can tighten at least two) remove it too and replace it with locktite on the threads. Replace everything and you're good to go...I have pictures of mine when I did this...I'll check to see if I can find them. The guy who did my '89 three years ago only tightened three of the bolts. The problem is the aluminum is not strong enough to hold the steering wheel by only three bolts with all that leverage. Now my steering column is loose again. Damn jerk charged me $130 for it. I only found out a couple weeks ago that he only tightened three of them.
