It was only on my '87 XJ for about two months but I only used the truck once or twice a week This setup probably has 200 miles on it. I had it installed so the draglink was infront of the tierod. Is that wrong? My steering was terrible with it. I could hold the steering wheel perfectly straight sometimes and other times the steering wheel would be turned about 3" to the right. Both times were going on a flat, straight surface. I had a friend turn the steering wheel while I watched the front end and sure enough I saw the draglink push the tierod up and down instead of right to left. Is this normal? I would rather use it instead of selling it since I paid $286.00 (with shipping) in January. Has anybody had any similar problems with this tie rod conversion? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Apr 2005 10:13:10 -0400 (EDT) From: john Subject: Re: xj: Thinking about buying a J-20 a J-20 would be a 3/4T truck, with 8 lug rims and Dana 60s. It'll ride a little harsh. Factory 4 bbl and so on is correct. The mile maker kit didn't save much in economy from what I've heard, but limits you in a few other ways, not a big deal. The AMC 360 is a boat anchor, leaks oil, leaks vacuum, heavy, produces a lot of heat... in this configuration you'll see something in the neighborhood of 8 to 11 mpg. depending on the price, it's still a good truck. You could respring it to get a better ride... :) and even sell off the axles and make it a J10 so you could have "normal" sized tires and rims... the 8 lugs are 16.5" john On Wed, 27 Apr 2005, loeb wrote: loeb-at-microtech.com > -->I'm considering buying a J-20, but can't find much info on them online. > --> Here's what the PO says about the truck. He already visited me last week and now most of my right side is useless! Stepped wrong and ripped the plantaris muscle in the back of my leg, followed by a bunch of nose bleeds over the past 2 weeks (from trying to take painkillers) and my chiro visit tuesday set my shoulder where it was supposed to be, and I woke up yetserday and it had slipped out worse! Top it off to find my right leg has an infection inside it that swelled it to the outside diameter of my pantleg. (I couldn't get them on last monday) Nope. No Murphy allowed here for awhile. From: john Subject: xj: steering column ok, had to tear it all apart...again... got the starter/trans lock thing lined up, then couldn't get the pins in... then figured out I had to lift the tilt mechanism to engage the pin on the top... bingo... pins slid right in... so I gently tap the pins into the column while making sure the ignition switch works and the dimmer switch functions... ..and the rapping on the column caused the spring that holds the black plastic gear slid down into the defroster... tried to get it with the claw, but it's quite evasive... so, I'm convinced that Mr. Murphy is in Snohomish... can someone PLEASE invite him over? please? :) I will not be defeated... this little XJ is not leaving the carport until it's restored to full functionality... ;) later, john ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Apr 2005 21:24:23 -0400 (EDT) From: john Subject: Re: xj: steering column I think I'll have to entertain him for a little while longer here then I guess... no volunteers? ;) john On Thu, 28 Apr 2005, Jim Blair wrote: >-->A: I'm not inviting him over here! With the J20 rear axle and J3000 front axle (33/15 front and 33/12.50/16.5 rear tires to match) I average about 17 mpg with 3.73 gears. I checked my odo against the highway markers to see. (Costs me almost as much to drive the J4000 as my '88 Comanche with 6 cyl 5 speed, same gearing and tires on the freeway. Comanche is a bit better in town) With the right truck shocks the ride isn't so harsh. I have a '76 J20 I need to drive home this upcoming week too (360, T18A, D20 with D44 front and Model 20 rear all 6 lug) that I'll have up for $700 obo. (I owned it for 6 months before and the current owner has taken pretty good care of it, mostly using it for hauling junk to the dump) a J-20 would be a 3/4T truck, with 8 lug rims and Dana 60s.
