I swapped on a cheap one and added a quart of oil, will test it to make sure it's ok, then give it the full meal amsoil deal. daugther will be home within two months! putting the '86 xj back together now... have the electrical problems fixed... getting ready to clear the clogged converter and tune it up. couldn't figure out why the rear speakers wouldn't work... :) there weren't any. rofl... :) the trunk latch on the '79 300SD broke off in my hand, guess getting those replacement parts was a good plan... ...kind of like that rack kit for the '86 xj. turns out my other friend had stopped by to help, he had the same problem I did. :) kind of funny... of course curtis comes over, puts the new parts on and it goes like clockwork... :) guess curtis chased murphy off... :) john On Sat, 7 May 2005, Kaleb C. The cat wasn't clogged, so I'm guessing the overheating at speed is the radiator, because it is clogged. :) the little white cherokee is doing much better after a tune and new vacuum lines... it's still got a little roughness to it... heading out to attempt another italian tuneup with a fresh oil filter... the warner oil filter collapsed internally! If this one holds up it'll get switched to amsoil... if it fails I may have to check the oil pump/check valve... oil pressure seems a little high to me. heading into town for some parts, when I get back I'll work on the '79 300SD. :) If murphy stays away I may have the trunk opening and closing as designed... ;) Need to get some hornet spray. :) later, john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 May 2005 00:54:27 -0400 (EDT) From: john Subject: xj: 4.0L symptom the '92 sport is doing much, much better... drove up to get an ice cream cone... temperature was stable, oil pressure stable.... would easily accelerate to the limit and then some... but when it's not under full throttle or heavy load it has a shudder or roughness... it's there from idle all the way up, except under full throttle... then it winds up like a hoover vacuum cleaner. When I got it couldn't do over 40mph without loosening fillings... now it'll wind up just fine... I've replaced all the vacuum lines, cleaned all the fittings and throttle body, it was gross, new NGK plugs, cap and rotor. Starts right up... revs up sweetly... The PO had a new cat installed, it has a good air cleaner and decent oil... replaced the damaged filter with a temporary fram and topped it off with some synthetic. At this point it's a toss up between just doing a shotgun approach and replacing any sensors that could do this, or take it to a shop with a computer and figure it out. BTW, the check engine light it not on any more, but the "Needs Maintenance" light is... where's that goofy timer thing on the '92? :) My close up vision in low light ain't very good. After coming up the clearview hill it was warm, but not hot, and idling into the drive it cooled back down naturally so I may just try to flush this radiator and call it good.
