When Jeep changed from the Renix computer to the Chrysler computer it changed the way you have to do things. 91 through about 95 or 6 use the plug on the left front splash guard in the engine compartment. It was not OBD II. In 95 or so they went to the industry standard OBD II. Usually you can go to Autozone or OReilly and they can do it. I bit the bullet and bought a used Snap On MT 2500 scanner on EBay for about 600 bucks and am able to do my own. You would be surprised how easy it makes it to fix weird problems like flaky sensors and wiring issues. With the Snap On unit it has both a primary cartridge and a trouble shooter cartridge. You can read the live data and compare it with what it should be. For example if the coolant sensor should be reading 70F and is actually reading -32, you can pretty much figure why the engine is running rich. As far as I know the Renix does not retain any code information but does allow you to read data using the Snap On Scanner and the Jeep 1 connector. But as I remember the data was pretty primitive. I agree. I have an 87 MJ and a 92 XJ and they are completely different animals. Different computers, different connectors, different mounting location for the computer, etc... To read codes in the 92 you use the key cycle trick. Many of the "bad codes" will reset themselves after a few key cycles AFTER the repair is made. (i.e. Code 12 means the battery has been disconnected in the last 50 key cycles.) I don't think I can read the codes out of the '87 that way. (but will admit it is OOC for a few years now and I may have forgotten) In either case the CheckEngine light is one that won't reset. It is programmed to click on at 82,500 miles as a reminder to change the oxygen sensor. BUT you have to pay $80 to have the stupid light cleared. (or drop by Mike's house) $80.00... I don't THINK so...wave bye-bye to the light bulb... I maintain my trucks VERY well thank you WITHOUT a modernized version of an idiot light.
