A ROAD TRIP. :) Driving eliminates having to pay for my wife's airfare... Problem is I don't want to take more vacation than necessary... ...and it looks like around 1,300 miles and 20hrs, give or take... that's just over two tanks of fuel in the '91 300D, estimate about 37 gallons (35mpg) or around $95 each way. total Diesel fuel about $190. If the Benz gets 37.5 mpg I should be able to get there on two tanks... the hotter weather helps the mileage... but we are talking mountains, so that drops it down to 34 or 35... how sad? ;) Mileage reimbursement would come to almost $500, oh, that's one way... even if the company only paid the equivalent in air fare, I could use the standard IRS rate as a deduction to reduce my tax liability for the difference. Hmmm... four days of fast driving in hot desert, or 10 hrs crammed in an aluminum tube after being searched, prodded and scrutinized... I think I'll drive. If we took the '99 WJ, estimating 18mpg, around 72 gallons one way, $180 in fuel... guess the same would be true if we took a 4.0L XJ... or $360 round trip in FUEL!!! If the 2.5L XJ got 24mpg then, 54 gals or $135. or $270 round trip. Man, I love my Diesel. :) If SuperDawg were done and I used all the veggie oil I have stockpiled right now, I could get there for about $35 in Diesel... :) (assuming 20mpg and at least 50 gallons of waste veggie oil. ;) Not to mention he'll have R12 A/C designed to cool a Wagoneer! And a white paint job to reduce heat... hey Curtis... can ya get him done in three weeks??? ;) - ------------ Checking http://maps.google.com/ they come up with a route by way of Salt Lake City, UT... say what? via that route total is 1,274 miles estimated time 19 hrs. That's two "long" days... doable... - ------------ But I decided to check some alternate routes: OPTION 1: Snohomish to Bakersfield, then Bakersfield to Vegas - total 1,354 miles est. 20.5 hrs!!! OPTION 2: Snohomish to Reno, then Reno to Vegas total 1,224 miles - estimated 22 hours! I confirmed with http://www.mapquest.com/directions/main.adp?bCTsettings=1 that the route via Boise and Salt Lake is the shortest in time... My hunch that the most direct route was through Reno is correct, but it takes 3 hours longer???? I've driven all three routes (sadly enough). I think the mapquest and google route is probably correct... I'm not sure what speed they're using for calculations... but that route is pretty easy... Just did the math, 67mph average speed... that means they calcluated the interstate at 75. I'm not sure I'm excited about 20 hrs in the car in the desert in June though... :) Too bad SuperDawg won't be done in time. Would be a great waste veggie oil run... wouldn't have to worry about heating my fuel. ;) (and no, I'm not going to run WVO through my 2.5L Turbo Diesel thank you... ;) thoughts? fly, drive or pass. :) john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 21:39:01 -0700 From: "Jim Blair" Subject: xj: Re: fastest way to Vegas take the train!
