From: barbierij-at-optonline.net Subject: xj: 4L removal As many know, I am currently removing the engine from my '89 XJ. I have been working on it for a couple days now but only about 4 to 5 hours a day. I still cant figure out what type of socket to use on the top bolts on the bell housing. Are those 8pt heads? I tried a 12pt 10mm on there, and of course the socket spun. I took the motor mounts out and even cut the passenger side mount that is on the block so I could lower the engine a couple inches in hopes of being able to see the top bolts. All I have to do is get these 8 bolts out and the engine is ready to be lifted out. I took pretty much everything out from under the hood minus the steering and A/C components (I am going to do a complete OBD2 setup from a 96). ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 May 2005 23:47:06 EDT From: Scrambler1987-at-aol.com Subject: xj: 4L removal What you need is a E12 Torx Socket. The bolt you are fighting is a 3/8" external torx, 6pt head. Be careful or you will strip the head and have one HECK of a time getting it out!!! Then you will have to pull the engine with the transmission so you can drill out the buggered bolt.......The best thing is to get the correct socket and then replace the torx head bolt with a grade 8 cap screw bolt, 3/8 by 1 3/4 long. Good luck! . Date: Sat, 28 May 2005 18:28:21 -0400 From: barbierij-at-optonline.net Subject: xj: 4L removal As many know, I am currently removing the engine from my '89 XJ. My vehicle of choice was 86 nissan 4x4. $150 cash. I haven't posted in a long time, just lurk. I recently purchase my fourth Jeep and plan to never be without again. I know it not an xj, but I bought a 96 zj with 4.0 and select trac. Just recently I was driving in Atlanta and when I cam to a stop the buzzer for check guages came on and I look to see no oil pressure. I checked the oil, it was due for a change, and it was low. I added and drove it home with it doing the same every time I stopped. If I was off idle it would read about 20-25 psi according to the guage. I change the oil and it was fine until Friday it did the same thing. I have only driven it about 200 miles since I changed the oil and I don't see any leaks or any in the filter box. The Jeep has 143K on it, but appears to be well cared for. It runs fine with no knocks or ticks. I have only driven it about 200 miles in the past 2 months due to motorcycle season. Also if anyone has a lift they want to sell let me know.
