A: I wonder if the dist is out of synch? As the motor ages, the chain stretches and makes it worse. I don't see fuel filter on your list. From: john Subject: xj: 4.0L engine issues the saga of the '92 sport 4.0L continues... it's getting better, but it's not there yet. original symptoms were anything over 45mph would cause terribly rough running, almost undriveable... replaced: - all plugs - spark plug wires - cap / rotor - coil - all injectors - vacuum harness - throttle position sensor - map sensor Anyone in the area is welcome to drop by and test drive it and see if they can guess better than me... ;) (hey where's Alan Chung when you need him? :) john ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jul 2005 00:09:07 -0700 From: "Jim Blair" Subject: RE: xj: 4.0L engine issues A: When my cat fell apart, it went into the muffler and blocked it off, cutting power as it did. If the air filter is getting clogged with blowby oil, the throttle body clogs up. We also recently removed the hose from my son's MAP sensor, and cleaned the tube with throttle body cleaner. HUGE difference in power and you should've seen the crud come out! From: "Okiebinder" Subject: RE: xj: 4.0L engine issues John, Your making me think I might have a clogged cat. This is on a '87 4.0L. I changed my TPS several months ago which did help a little..... however the Jeep is still very sluggish esp. at speed like going down the highway at 50-60 and no real power when I give it gas. I put a muffler on a couple of years ago.. maybe I should take a look at the cat as well. hmmm.... I don't hear it rattle but it could be clogged. Does this sound right to you? It had an alternator that could power a small city attached to a 6V71 Detroit diesel. The city of Kent cut power and Boeing's generator kicked in and ran the whole block for almost a week before anyone noticed. :) Or so I've been told, myth or fact, I suppose I could check it out... ;) This one is a V16 Cummins... massive twin turbo, one mega watt output... backup power for the digital forest... :) john ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jul 2005 08:53:50 -0500 From: "Okiebinder" Subject: RE: xj: 4.0L engine issues Thanks Jim, When I bought the Jeep, the air filter had quite a bit of oil in the air filter. I changed all the vac lines out with the kit you can get from Jeep. Which did away with the blow by problem I was having. I just changed my air filter a couple of weeks ago, it had no oil in it after a couple of years now. I had a MAP sensor installed a few months ago. However I have never cleaned out the hose to the MAP sensor. I will do that tonight. Thanks for your ideas. I live in Oklahoma.... we don't have inspections here any longer. I wonder if I can just do away with the cat on my Jeep... or does the Jeep need to have the cat to operate correctly? It is a 1987 4.0L. Just a thought. Thanks again Jim. The newer emissions systems are actually quite good and help efficiency. The stuff from '75 and earlier, well... that's another story. :) john On Wed, 20 Jul 2005, Okiebinder wrote: >-->Thanks Jim, >--> >-->When I bought the Jeep, the air filter had quite a bit of oil in the air >-->filter. (anyone know of a ZJ list?) All the wiring has been unpinched (only a couple spots were damaged that I could see but the right side harness was pinched at the firewall) I'm still trying to determine what is what (and remove what I don't need for my J10's conversion) The '93's AW4 shift computer is next to the brake pedal under the VIN number with 2 through bolts next to the fender under the hood. There are 2 computers under the hood. EFI on the left, and something else on the right behind the heater fan. (fuse block next to the battery) I removed some of the fuses and relays (AC, airbag, ABS) that shouldn't keep it from starting. I don't have the speedo or dash computer interface or AC/heater system hooked up. I also unplugged all the door controls (power windows, power door locks, door ajar, seatbelts, interior light, etc) and the airbag controller between the seats (box was bent, but intact) The harness up to the overhead console was cut when the roof was removed (before I got it) but it's run since. There was a "tail light out" sensor in the rear left and (I think) trailer harness in the rear right. I also undid the harness for the rear hatch (fully loaded with wipers, defrost, license, 3rd stop and interior lights and speakers as well as washer) Not sure what else I can take out of the loop yet, but the alrm has me bugged because the box was bent open (appears undamaged inside) and the one on the right under the hood was damaged on the outside. I also unhooked the cruise control and found the extra plug under the dash goes to the transmission harness. Not sure what else I can do at this point. There is a box under the back seat with an arrow on it that I don't know what it runs. Any help would be appreciated. I don't even have Childrens for ZJ/XJ anymore. This was taken from today's issue of an email newsletter published by the AirFinance Journal. Gotta love it. And finally Before deploying from Savannah, Georgia, to Iraq by a chartered airliner; the troops of the 48th Brigade Combat Team, a National Guard unit, had to go through the same security checks as any other passengers. Lt. Col. John King, the unit's commander, told his 280 fellow soldiers that FAA anti-hijacking regulations require passengers to surrender pocket knives, nose hair scissors and cigarette lighters. "If you have any of those things," he said, almost apologetically, "put them in this box now." The troops were, however, allowed to keep hold of their assault rifles, body armour, helmets, pistols, bayonets and combat shotguns. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Jul 2005 19:56:03 -0700 From: john meister Subject: xj: wagoneers.com is taking a nap started to do a disk intensive operation on wagoneers.com this morning... by the time I got to work there was no pulse... paramedics couldn't revive it... went to the local PC parts house picked up a case/ps and motherboard, building a new SuSE Linux system to replace the deceased Sun Ultra 10 (Solaris 9). This was something I was planning to get more space, offer accounts/webspace etc, it was expedited is all. :) I'll have it built tonight and either run it down to the digital forest tonight or in the morning... :) Provided of course the motherboard will be happy with only one memory chip.. blah, blah... while at the pc store some guy came up and offered to buy shadowfax... for more than book value... he crawled all over the car, listened to it... he said he'll be in touch... so unless he's just a lunatic on the loose I'll hear from him again... already let bruce know so he has a shot at shadowfax. Need to get SuperDawg done... optimistic that the driveline will be in by the time I get back from Tokyo, then curtis plans to get the body parts painted while the weather is good. Meanwhile, the Jimmy should get home this week, and not too soon... my barrels runneth over... gave away 10 gallons of filtered veggie oil last night and a few more to chuck on monday... put 5 gallons in shadowfax... bringing home another 20 gallons on Monday too... yikes... and my new replacement Northern Hydraulics 12v transfer pump blew it's fuse 3 gallons into the first batch, resorted to manual... rats. I need to get the A/C fixed in the little blue '86 XJ too, might be driving that if the Jimmy doesn't get here soon... ;) well, off to assemble a pc and load SuSE... LW wagoneers.com will be back on line by lunchtime on Saturday. john ------------------------------ End of xj-digest V1 #2137 *************************
