I sold my '96 4.0L to a friend and he's bringing his "dead" engine back... and of course I've got the '92 sitting in the drive that is super clean, but has a bad #6 cylinder... So, since no one is buying it, I'm thinking it's time to play wrench... suppose I should build the carport first. ;) I started looking at other strokers in the link that Jim gave me... I may just jump on one if it's cheaper than a rebuild... thoughts? I'm still convinced that a 4.0L in an FSJ would provide much, much better economy than a 360 V8 or a 4.2L I-6. It may not be as fast, but even that is hard to say. The 4.0L engine is a great power plant. I'm still impressed by this 2.5L TBI in the '86, it's able to pull the 2,000lb trailer WITH A LOAD of gravel in it! Not fast mind you, but it does it. I've relisted the '86 XJ on craigslist, it needs a nice home, it's a sweet Cherokee... http://seattle.craigslist.org/car/99623733.html I'm going to drive it into town to get the title stuff for Mark's "new" '48 Willys: http://wagoneers.com/JEEPS/marks-48/ (it has a Pinto 2.0L in it with the stock trans... I'm so jealous... ;) I did find a couple engines on ebay that might save me some time on getting the white XJ running... anyone know what a 4.0L core complete with tin is worth to anyone? I'll have two, complete... both should be easily rebuilt! a 92 and a 96. I also have an AW4 with a custom adapter to mate to an FSJ xfr case... I wonder if I shouldn't build a 4.0L powered FSJ.... Let's see, if I fix the white '92, then build an FSJ with a4.0L, I might just barely break even when I sell both... ;) ah, yes, but it's the adventure, right? ;) john On Sat, 24 Sep 2005, Jim Blair wrote: >-->http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TITAN-4-0-87-98-JEEP-STROKER-ENGINE-MOTOR-4-6- >-->4-7_W0QQitemZ8002163004QQcategoryZ33615QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem-->om/ebaymotors/TITAN-4-0-87-98-JEEP-STROKER-ENGINE-MOTOR-4-6-4-7_W0QQitemZ8002 >-->163004QQcategoryZ33615QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem> >--> ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Sep 2005 14:56:29 -0700 From: "Jim Blair" Subject: xj: New engine/transmission reccomendations Anyone done a 2.8L V6 to 4 cyl swap in an XJ? I sold the '95 YJ 2.5L to a buddy of mine and he just found out the rig he got to put the motor into was a V6 and not 4 cyl (although from the looks of the oil pan, there are only 4 rods left moving in it!) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Sep 2005 20:32:29 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: xj: 4.0L question ok, my "core" '96 4.0L returned today. the 4.0L I had slated for SuperDawg is now living quite happily in another '96 XJ. The engine that was returned to me was overheated, and compression was low in two cylinders, about 106,000 miles on it... will get the exact reading, but my friend was thinking 170 on the good cylinders, 150 on the two "low" ones. Well, 150 sounds a lot better than 0. So what I may do is pull the '92 4.0L for another buddy, let him rebuild it for his CJ7 and give him all the '96 wiring/accessories, then take the '96 4.0l and bolt up all my '92 stuff and drop it in. (I bought a shop crane today! folds up nice... no sooner had I assembled it then I got to pull the engine out of the back of my buddy's truck. ;) Anyway, QUESTION IS THIS: - will the '96 engine be content with '92 plumbing? (I know it'll bolt up ok) - will the '92 rebuilt work ok with the '96 plumbing? If I can just swap out the engines like this it'll save me a rebuild and put the white '92 back on the road as a cheap Jeep for someone and gets me out of the used car business for a while. ;) '92 4.0L specs: 3.88x3.41 242cuin 8.8:1 190hp-at-4750rpm torque 225ftlbs-at-4000 '96 4.0L specs: 3.88x3.41 242cuin 9.2:1 190hp-at-4600rpm torque 225ftlbs-at-3000 thanx, john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Sep 2005 14:43:47 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: xj: thoughts on price I'm getting a few calls, but I'm out in the sticks so no one has made it out to look at this thing yet... based on what you can see, what would be your guess on a fair price? 134,000 miles 2.5L AT selectrac, clean, solid, runs good, blah, blah... only needs a few minor things to make it nearly perfect, nothing major... http://wagoneers.com/XJ/rigs/1986XJ/ALL.html let me know, based on your respected input I may drop the price so it goes away...
