If you could have only ONE FSJ... which would you chose? A nice '91 Grand Wagoneer, or an '83 J10 stepside? For original list members this might be an old thread... we used to have these chats about 11 years ago when the list started. :) We've decided we're going to have two vehicles... one of them is going to be my wife's '99 WJ... that leaves me to chose one of the following... (maybe 2... ;) - - '91 Grand Wagoneer (getting a 6.2L Diesel) - - '83 J10 stepside (drivetrain in limbo...) - - '91 300D (2.5L TD) - - '48 Willys CJ-2A The Willys might be able to stick around... but reality is that I don't need two vehicles for myself... the '91 GW has all the items I want in a daily driver... sunroof, flash to pass lights, good ride/view... with the 6.2L Diesel it should get at least 20mpg, and with the dual tanks can run on WVO... making it even more practical... it can tow my trailer... it can carry passengers... it's respectable. It was an unexpected and unplanned acquisition, but desireable and preferable over the J10. the '83 J10 is unique, was fun to drive, useful... but it's longer than the GW so not as nimble... carries one passenger... stuff gets wet in the back... ;) depending on the engine it might see high teens or 20. If superdawg would have been put together in time for Ouray we wouldn't be having this discussion... the 300D and GW would have never entered the stable... the '91 300D is the best car I've ever owned... very respectable, reliable and economical... don't care for the seats or the climate control... but otherwise it's great... 27 to 30 in town... large trunk... handles great... but it can't tow or haul... it's ok in snow, better than expected... but the reality is I'd rather drive a Jeep... So, yes, at some point in time it looks like I'll probably sell Shadowfax again... Guess we'll have to see if the GW will get good enough economy to allow us to part with the 124. :) The '48 CJ-2A will probably stick around until I can get it completely 100% so I get the maximum out of it... in the meantime it'll look great behind my Grand Wagoneer... :) So, the question is... J10 or GW? I'm leaning toward the GW... will have Superdawg reassembled back to stock and repaired to perfection... will keep him around for a while, but I suspect he's going to lose the contest to the GW... :( The plan has always been to have one nice Diesel powered Jeep... this quest started for me around 1990... I had an '85 XJ that was just about perfect... except for two problems: manual trans and no towing capacity... (that and the french parts would have been a major expense over time...) When I got Old Blue the plan was to go Diesel... but I got the 360 running too well and decided to move on... Now it's working out where I'm able to get a Diesel in a '91 GW... I did seem to swear off Wagoneers after that white NT Cherokee because of the tailgate... so if this tailgate gives me grief it'll be replaced with a barn door, if I have to make it out of plywood. ;) john '99 WJ (4.7L V8) '91 GW (soon 6.2L Diesel) '75 J10 trailer '48 CJ-2A '91 300D (2.5L TD) '83 J10 (????) While 175k miles is no where near high for a jeep, you need to be carefull with excessive blowby. This usually shows up as an oil soaked airfilter. The blowby will blow oil through the breather and the airbox will suck this oil into the filter...Sometimes cleaning out the vacuum tube in the back of the valve cover will reduce this problem, but most likely it's in need of a ring job...not fun.. I have three jeeps and none are under 200k (my 89ltd has 250k and running strong). Other than that, make sure it switches into and out of 4wd. If the 4wd lever has a 4HI (it lights up in green) then you can drive this jeep in 4wd on solid pavement! Check for other niceities like skid plates under the engine, transfer case and gas tank...my 89 LTD came with the upcountry package so it came with all the goodies.
