The antifreeze industry says for the best anti-corrosion protection, 50/50 (especially with vehicles that have aluminum and cast iron parts) and anti-freezing ability as well, but for the best cooling, water is better with 10-25% anti-freeze. I run about 25% and add water wetter which makes a HUGE improvement. As for the XJ factory replacement rads, they are a POS compared to Modine for cooling and longevity. Even comparing an el cheapo Performance brand rad to stock is a huge difference. I have had several customers complain both of the late model 4.0L heads cracking and running not, even after putting in a new factory rad. A Modine replacement has cured 1 so far (he went to Mexico and back with his '96 after chasing issues with overheating in our 80 degree heat here. Last thing he did was change the rad before he left. The Dealer one will be going back under warranty he hopes) One other thing to account for heat is the type of oil and filter you run as well. Had a customer today with a brand new Modine 3 row rad in his '90 Grand Wagoneer that was overheating. Engine was squealing badly too and I did a quick switch of his oil filter (from Pennzoil PZ30 that looks suspiciously like a PH11 with yellow paint job) to a NAPA 91626 (Spin Flow middle quality filter with metric thread used by Mopar and Jeep before '91 when they switched to 1085 Gold, 91085 Spinflow or 21085 Silver in descending quality/price order) I added 1/2 quart of 15W40 (to make up for what was lost with the filter I swapped out, even though hardly a trickle came out) and he started the Jeep. Noise was a little quieter at first, then nearly went away, but it was unfortunately too late for his rig (I caught mine on my J4000 with 304 just a couple weeks ago when the pressure suddenly dropped but my wife tossed the filter before I could cut it open). I can hear the deep metal thump of a nearly gone rod or main bearing. His lifters and rockers which had zero oil before (and were smoking) are now full and the funny part is his oil pressure gauge actually reads lower than it did before! We plan to take a can opener to his old filter to see if it's internally collapsed and if it has Fram identifiers inside as well. The 360 motor will have to be torn out and replaced. From: ernest breakfield Subject: Re: 1992 4.0 XJ Running Hot w/Borla Headers hi john! are you sure? what i've read in the past stated that straight water was better at transferring heat than antifreeze, and it's the pressure in the system that increases the boiling point, not the mixture... cheers! e john wrote: > >50% is the recommended blend, it increases boiling point as well as lowering freezing temp... > >john http://messenger.msn.click-url.com/go/onm00200471ave/direct/01/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Aug 2006 21:35:15 -0700 From: "Jim Blair" Subject: Re:: xj: Computer codes A: 72 = Vehicle Speed Sensor. I do the key on-off routine to get the computer codes and it flashes 12 - 72 - 55. I know the 12 (it always flashes that...don't know why) and I konw the 55...but every code list I have seen does not have a 72 code. I checked the allpar site and looked at several of the code lists and there is no 72 code listed in any of them... Does anybody have an idea what this mystery code may be? Finally home and unpacked by 7pm. 3,649 miles. 5 crispy creme donuts, gallons of coffee... Last tank was 19.47mpg, overall average appears to be around 17.7, almost 18mpg. Had two tanks mid 19's. The '99 WJ with a 4.7L V8 did quite well. Cruise locked in at 75mph plus a few and held rock steady. The 45RFE trans did a superb job of holding the speed down mountain passes. I never had to use the brakes! Very happy with the way the WJ performed and handled. The a/c could have been a few degrees colder in town when it was 115 outside, but hey, even my mother-in-law's a/c couldn't keep it cool inside the house! The tires were superb, have the Bridgestone Revo A/Ts. also happy with my new Lumix / Panasonic DMC-FZ7 digital camera... turns on quickly and takes pictures quickly... The mileage wasn't too bad considering we crossed the continental divide over 7 times wandering through Montana and Wyoming... Glacier and Yellowstone. Temps were horrific... We left Seattle with mid-90 degree temps. Once over into Montana well over 100. Even in Yellowstone we had high 90's. South Dakota saw temps over 100 from Wed through Monday. One day saw 115 degrees. Heavy storm came in and temps dropped to the 80's. Had the rear pinion seal replaced in Mitchell, SD for $59! A well known shop and rear end parts house here in Everett quoted me $390. It think it was a mistake. My Interstate battery did not like the 115 degrees and the other 100+ temps for the week and a half and gave up the ghost. Free warranty replacement. Then in Spokane I noticed a leak in my PS unit, haven't crawled underneath yet, nothing serious, just slightly messy. Saturday is hereby declared CJ saturday! A friend is coming over to help swap the T-90 and install the top. Will get it all put together with Amsoil throughout and new rubber parts. Hope to have it all together and driveable this weekend!!! :) Does anyone know if the Weber carb that was used on a 4.2L I-6 will work on a Ford 2.0L? I don't know the number off hand, but am thinking of using it on my Cj-2A. I'll have to check the power steering lines tomorrow on the WJ and do a once over on my 124 since it's been sitting for 2 weeks. It's going to be strange driving something that close to the ground... the other aspect is the fact I've been driving a V8 for two weeks, not sure what a 2.5L Diesel will feel like... expecting a shock to my system. :) I will be dragging home 2 4.0L's on Sunday, my '92 and '96, will rebuild the '96 for use in SuperDawg... that leaves the '92 with a bad #6 for sale. JEEP parts for sale: - '91 360 V8, runs great 130k - '91 TF727 - needs to be rebuilt - '91 NP229 - good condition - '83 4.2L - bad #2 rings - 130k - '83 T-5 - rebuilt with world class parts (mated to the 4.2L) - 2 TH400s with universal cases (have the Buick adapter ring for one) - Dana 20 xfr case (currently attached to a TH400) - T-90 from CJ-2A - has issues with 2nd gear - '92 4.0L engine with bad #6 cylinder - '89 AW4 - '89 NP231 for sale this Fall after Omega is done: '91 300D 2.5L TD when superdawg is done: '75 J10 hydraulic dump trailer Will consider trades for having the '96 4.0L rebuilt or a car trailer. john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Aug 2006 22:12:50 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: xj: RE: fsj: weights of Jeeps sJ weight's vary a lot! my '81 wagoneer limited tipped the scales at 5,200lbs my '67 wagoneer tipped them around 4,890 my '83 J10 stepside tipped them around 4,100. john On Thu, 3 Aug 2006, michel balea wrote: > -->thank you for the infos.... i always had trouble to find the SJ weight.... > -->in the specs it is never listed.... > --> > --> > -->a little bit of google produces: > --> > -->WJ Curb weight: 3669 lb (1664 kg) > -->KJ Curb weight: 4033 lb (1829 kg) > --> > -->this is 364 pounds difference, with the KJ weighing more (that's > -->the little ugly and slow Liberty with the Mercedes influence, > -->and not in a good way...) > --> > -->XJ Curb weight: 3386 ls (WILL VARY ACROSS YEARS and models) > -->ZJ Curb weight: 4052 lb (1838 kg) > -->WK Curb weight: 4490 lb (2037 kg) > -->SJ Curb weight: 4514 lb (2048 kg) (will vary across years and > -->models) CJ-2A - around 2,300lbs > --> > --> ---- > --> > -->------------------------------------------------------------------------- > --> ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** > --> Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold > --> ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** > -->------------------------------------------------------------------------- > --> > --> ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of xj-digest V1 #2382 *************************
