I let the 92 xj sit for a few weeks and then drove it but when I did the alt indicator on the dash said it was charging like 14 volts and this smell appeared. Isnt the regulator in the alternator or do I need to replace it as well? Last night I had turned the ignition on but didn't start it and let it do this for about 15 minutes to see if it would smell without the alternator turning and no smell. The other thought I had was could this smell be the A/C clutch since it got doused with hot coolant when the heater hose spewed all over into it when a hole let loose getting up to speed on an on ramp. I am getting ready to do a pre run for the parker 425 off road race in it this Sunday and don't want to have it break down on me. Your assistance is appreciated. Oh by the way, the assistance with removal and replacement of the rear hatch window was great especially the tip on using a string to pull the rubbing lip into the inside of the hatch. THANK YOU. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Jan 2008 10:07:23 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: RE: xj: Re: Bad battery weirdness hard to say... I'd get professional help... have the alternator tested and check all fusible links and fuses... do a complete electrical test and make sure all the grounds are solid... if you have a bad ground you'll get some ozone/smell. john ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://freegift.com ** http://wagoneers.com ** - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- there's a solution for every problem; problem is can we afford the solution? - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- On Thu, 3 Jan 2008, Gary wrote: # I am getting a smell like electronics burning, I replaced my battery then # the alternator died so I replaced that. What year is it? Where are you in Italy? I've got some friends in Naples and Firenza. I visited Italy in 1976, in my 1967 Mustang. :) I'm going to send your note to the FSJ list, and some friends in Europe for extra help. folks, be sure to email/cc Luca at: campo-at-midwayadv.com I've put the pictures of his beautiful Grand Wagoneer at: http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/rigs/Luca-IT-GW/ In answering through your email, my responses are here: 1) I'm not sure what the problem might be with the engine. I would replace all the vacuum lines and make sure they match the diagram under the hood, and that all bolts on the intake manifold are torqued correctly. Check the spark plug wiring order as well: http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/tech/firingorder.html Then, I would run a compression test on the engine cylinders. I ran a test on my '89 Grand Wagoneer and got these results: Compression test on 360 V8 reads: 135, 140, 130, 130, 130, 120, 135 and 145 This reading is in PSI - Pounds per Square Inch. I'm not sure what unit of measure you would use. I have a shareware tool that will convert it into metric, you can download it from: http://wagoneers.com/CS/TOOLS/Convert.exe 2) This sounds like the transmission may be failing. The Torqueflite 727 is not very long lived. You may need to have it rebuilt. I would add an external transmission cooler and use Synthetic ATF. The transmission does NOT route oil to the cooler when in PARK. 3) I would recommend joining the FSJ list on digest.net. http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/FSJ-list.html There are many on the list that will be able to help. There are folks in Europe on the list as well. I don't know of any Italians on the list though. I've got a couple friends up in Nederland, Norway and Sweden, and one over in Ireland (Stephen, can't find your email, sent this to the DieselBenz list. :). They might be able to help you locate parts in Europe to avoid shipping and tax issues. I would like to get back to Italy, I missed Firenza... drove right by it not realizing that it was Florence. :( Ciao, john ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://freegift.com ** http://wagoneers.com ** - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- there's a solution for every problem; problem is can we afford the solution? - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- On Fri, 4 Jan 2008, MIDWAYadv wrote: # Hello John, my name is Luca and I write to you from Italy.
