I checked my fluid and it is full. Once I got a little ways, it stopped slipping and has been fine. I'm worried this is the first sign of bad news. Anyone have a notion where this might be headed? Thanks. Fyi: 92 Cherokee, 4.0, automatic 4WD, well-maintained, 237k miles and going strong (until today). (the 42re used in the ZJ and in the 4.0L WJs is horrible, but not problematic in the WJ, just in the ZJ...) john ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://freegift.com ** http://wagoneers.com ** - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- there's a solution for every problem; problem is can we afford the solution? - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- On Tue, 5 Feb 2008, Secure Channel wrote: # So today I came up a steep hill for about 1/4 mile (or about 400 feet of # elevation) and when I got to the top the tranny (automatic) was in third # gear and slipping like a burnt out clutch on a 51 Ford. # # I checked my fluid and it is full. It appears to shift fine between all other gears, and if let sit it shifts fine to OD as well. The Chrysler dealership seems to think this indicates an internal problem or overheating condition due to problems. Any idea what this might be? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Feb 2008 07:36:38 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: Re: xj: speaking of trannies no idea... I know a good tranny shop in Lynnwood WA that could diagnose it... but any tranny shop could do that... I'd consider swapping in an AW4 before I'd fix the 42re. I thought I'd get better mileage with a 4.0L WJ, but didn't... and I am convinced it was because of the 42re trans... especially after hearing of so many problems in the ZJ... I'm going to hold on to my AW4 with the custom adatper to fit SJ xfr cases... just in case I find another project. ;) hopefully I'll have my 6.2L Diesel powered Grand Wagoneer on the road by the end of the month. :) john ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://freegift.com ** http://wagoneers.com ** - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- there's a solution for every problem; problem is can we afford the solution? - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- On Wed, 6 Feb 2008, David Smith wrote: # My 97 ZJ with the 4L and 42RE tranny had the OD light come on yesterday (the # OD disable light/button) and it shifted out of OD while on 280 northbound. # It appears to shift fine between all other gears, and if let sit it shifts # fine to OD as well. # # The Chrysler dealership seems to think this indicates an internal problem or # overheating condition due to problems. # # Any idea what this might be? # ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Feb 2008 09:03:21 -0800 From: Kevin Subject: Re: xj: Re: Transmission Slip, 92 Cherokee The filter in an AW4 is just a screen. Generally, if you have to replace the filter in an AW4 because it's clogged, bigger problems aren't far away. The good news is a junkyard AW4 is likely to last a very long time.
