Well my 97 Jeep had a 42RE failure again, this time I opted to put in an unknown mileage tranny bought from a wrecker with 6 mo warranty. It seems to work OK, the only issue I have is that from a dead stop if I do any more than slowly throttle up the tranny starts to chatter and skip. If I start off the line slowish then accelerate I can accelerate as hard as I want with no problems. Any ideas what this might be? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Feb 2008 16:21:41 +0000 (GMT) From: barbierij-at-optonline.net Subject: Re: xj: 42RE help? Good thing there is a warranty on it. I would bring it back without fooling around with it. Does it only do this in 1st gear? Only first gear. It has a warranty but just on the tranny, not the labor. Probably bad teeth on 1st gear. They should replace the tranny for you free of charge since you just purchased it and it was defective when it was installed. It's not like you have been driving it around for months, and even then it shouldn't do that. Just my opinion. It seems that these days there aren't too many service shops, or stores in this case, that have integrity and credibility. I purchased a mattress from Resnick's (a local chain) that was defective, and all I could get is store credit. So they sold the chain to another party, and now my $650 in credit is worthless. Hope all goes well. Jesse. - ----- Original Message ----- From: David Smith Date: Wednesday, February 13, 2008 11:38 am Subject: Re: xj: 42RE help? Purchased the tranny from a wrecker and installed by my own mechanic, if that helps explain why. Thanks. Dave On 2/13/08, barbierij-at-optonline.net wrote: > > Probably bad teeth on 1st gear. No. I'm not going to get into changing PCMs, I'm already on #3 and apparently finally got one that works. I took my mechanic for a drive today and he confirmed what I believed, the clutch pack is chattering. I've started the process for replacing the tranny under warranty. Lucky for me the mechanic likes me, and is going to discount the second install. I'm still trying to see if I can get some kind of partial refund from the wrecker as well to help pay the mechanic. dave On 2/13/08, john wrote: > > sounds like a lockup issue... or a torque converter... > > any possibility of migrating that trans to an AW4 or a 45RFE? > > john > > ----- > ---------------------------------------------------------------------- > Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold > http://freegift.com ** http://wagoneers.com ** > ---------------------------------------------------------------------- > > > On Wed, 13 Feb 2008, barbierij-at-optonline.net wrote: > > # Good thing there is a warranty on it. > # I would bring it back without fooling around with it. > # Does it only do this in 1st gear? > # > # Jesse. > # > # ----- Original Message ----- > # From: David Smith > # Date: Wednesday, February 13, 2008 1:55 am > # Subject: xj: 42RE help? > # To: xj-at-digest.net > # > # > Well my 97 Jeep had a 42RE failure again, this time I opted to > # > put in an > # > unknown mileage tranny bought from a wrecker with 6 mo warranty. > # > > # > It seems to work OK, the only issue I have is that from a dead > # > stop if I do > # > any more than slowly throttle up the tranny starts to chatter > # > and skip. > # > If I start off the line slowish then accelerate I can accelerate > # > as hard as > # > I want with no problems. > # > > # > Any ideas what this might be? > # ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Feb 2008 09:20:59 -0600 From: Allen Zylstra Subject: RE: xj: 42RE help? That is going to be my plan when the 42re goes. I have 170K and still chuggin. The 93 ZJ had the AW4 so the correct mounts are available stock. I think a computer from an XJ is needed to control the AW4 and give the PCM the correct signals.
