I'm trying to figure out if I'm doing something wrong. I usually run a bottle of Sea Foam thru the gas tank with each oil change to keep the injectors clean, could that hurt the pump, or has there been some change in the gas that is hard on them, or just their time? Anyone else have pump problems, misery loves company. My fuel gauge stopped working as well but that is probably because the pump was installed strange but the pump did quit. My son's car had to have a new fuel pump a few years ago due to bad gas but I'm not sure that's relevant. Michael Hissom aurea mediocritas **************Gas prices getting you down? Three days later, the car died...turns out that the fuel sender was bad. The gauge read just over a quarter of a tank and the onboard computer said 90 miles, but the thing ran out of gas...The dealer replaced the fuel pump (because it is one piece with the sender). Now the gauge reads correctly (I think), But what this story is leading to is that this independant used car dealer said that he has been seeing more failed fuel pumps as of late...and usually they are on pre y2k vehicles. Now, racking my brain and delving into the shadowy dusty parts I haven't been to in years, I seem to remember that vehicles that run alcohol in their gasoline have issues with certain rubber seals having problems..And with the new reformulated gas using alcohol, it may be contributing to the early demise of fuel related items...The dealer said that's a possibility...but nothing can be done about it. I wonder if someone has done exhaustive tests on this to see if the alcohol causes any issues on older cars? We have passed a bill here in OK, starting July 1st, that states the gas stations MUST post if the gas they are selling has alcohol added. This is in response to the lowered gas mileage, not damage to the fuel system. However I seem to remember hearing some where that there is issues with some rubber seals in older cars. I am holding off driving my 67 Mustang till the 1st, so that I will "know" what is going in my tank. XJ related..... I am also a little concerned about this in the 87 Jeep, but I have to drive something..... and it is a Jeep! so it can take it right? ;-} David On Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 2:53 PM, Ed Kummel wrote: > It's funny...I just purchased a used car (97 Sebring convertible) so I can > get > better gas mileage (23 mpg in the convertible as opposed to 15 mpg on the > Jeep > XJ). > Three days later, the car died...turns out that the fuel sender was bad. > The > gauge read just over a quarter of a tank and the onboard computer said 90 > miles, but the thing ran out of gas...The dealer replaced the fuel pump > (because it is one piece with the sender).
