Jeep gauges are for amusement purposes only. Yes, it merits looking at the situation, but don't rule out the gauge (or more likely sender) as the problem. This has caused quite a bit of embarrassment on the trail. An infrared thermometer works well for this. Could be radiator. Could be a sticky/lazy thermostat. Could be that your electric fan isn't doing what it is supposed to do. Unfortunately, there's lots of possibilities for running hot. (most XJs in proper operating condition actually run *cooler* with the AC on because of the Aux Fan. some trail guides actually suggest using AC because of this while working low-wpeed trail work, as it provides the benefit of a cooler trans, as well.) if you have the AC on, that Aux Fan should be cycling at least every time the AC compressor kicks on, and staying on if you're coolant temp is up around 240* until it gets back down around 215*.B B if the fan's not working, check the fuse, first. (i've lost this fuse twice in 14 years/230K miles.)B B if the fuse is good, check by jumpering 12VDC to the fan directly at its plug.B B if you verify that the fan itself is the culprit, make sure you replace it with one of the later models (easily distinguished by the curved blades) as they allegedly move more air. here's hoping it's something that easy! My brother's y2k made the radiator smell like raw fuel after you started it. Fairly hard to crack an earlier head, I thought, but the gasket is totally game. My life with the storm trooper gets more interesting. Today I stopped to pick up some parts and when I came back out and started the Jeep the AC would not come on. I noticed that the the temp gauge had actually reached the lower edge of the red zone. When I arrived home and had a chance to grab a glass of milk and change into my wrenching outfit, by the time I got back outside the temp was now showing 210 and the AC came on normally. So does the SMEC have a cutout for the AC if it believes that the engine is overheating? I am starting to think I want to rethink my wife's naming of the Jeep. There is something that is not sitting well with me, knowing that I have to associate with a vehicle that has attachments to the dark side of the force. Yesterday the storm trooper just kept getting hotter as I was driving, and eventually I ended my day with a trip to the radiator shop where they are installing a new radiator today. In other news I noticed in the evening that the interior lights do not come on when I open the rear hatch. I looked around the hatch assembly and could not figure out where the switch lives that activates the dome lights when you open the hatch. Does anybody know where this thing is located?
