Hey folks I've been pretty quiet for some time after selling my running XJs, well now it looks like I'm coming back. Just picked up a 2000 Cherokee Sport 4.0 that blew the lower radiator hose on the prev owner & had low compression, white smoke, little ick in the oil. Head's already at the machine shop getting checked out for warping, cracks, etc. Anyone mind giving me crib notes on what I should watch out for on this particular year? Any special do's/dont's? Also for those interested here's a local craigslist nissan diesel already setup for Mil Jeep. I'd be thinking wild thoughts myself if I didn't just get this XJ in. http://kansascity.craigslist.org/pts/853693883.html ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Sep 2008 14:39:31 -0700 From: Kevin Subject: Re: xj: Getting back into the XJs & nissan diesel on craigslist. Basically, you're looking at the same problem as my brother's y2k, which even after getting a new head, still has problems and light bearing noise. Engine's coming out, probably has a toast bearing, and I'm going to get another shortblock together. I'll have the head I put on it checked to make sure it's still okay (y2ks have coil on plug bosses on the head), and put that on the new shortblock. FWIW, I have yet to find one thing that the face lifted XJs offer that earlier ones do not, other than added expense and annoyance. Anyone? (And before you say 29 spline 8.25, which this one has, I'd argue the earlier D44 is an upgrade.) I won't get another wj with the 4.0, not because of the engine, but because of the 42re trans they used, I think it's the same disaster they used in the zjs... the v8 gets better mileage overall by using the 45rfe. my 4.0 wj barely got 18, my 4.7v8 wj gets 21 at times... john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold SAVE fuel: use synthetics: http://www.AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 SAVE power: use LINUX: http://johnmeister.com/tmcp.pdf http://wagoneers.com http://wagoneers.com/johns-vehicles.html - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Fri, 26 Sep 2008, Kevin wrote: # Basically, you're looking at the same problem as my brother's y2k, which # even after getting a new head, still has problems and light bearing noise. # Engine's coming out, probably has a toast bearing, and I'm going to get another # shortblock together.
