I got my 2000 XJ put together over the weekend, but near as we can tell the aux electric fan is never coming on & the jeep is getting hot when parked/shutdown. I tested the fan unit tonight & it definately works, so there must be an issue on the relay/fuse/controller side of things. I found the relay & fuse for the system under the hood, but I'm not sure how to test the relay to make sure it's working. Are there any additional fuses for the fan system on the panel inside the kickpanel? Does the elec fan system use the regular temp to control it or does it have it's own temp sensor that kicks it on & off? Anyone have any suggestions for possible issues? I need to get this thing up & running asap since I had my only other vehicle lay down on me earlier today. Also anyone have a diagram of the kickpanel fuseblock for the ~2K jeeps? Looks like a previous owner threw the cover away & that's where the fuses are all identified. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Oct 2008 18:14:55 -0700 From: ernestb-at-backyardengineering.org Subject: RE: xj: Aux fan info needed! hey Jeremiah! questions: why do you think the fan *should* come on? the standard design didn't call for the Aux Fan to come on unless the coolant temp got over about 240*F or the A/C compressor was engaged (except in certain cases where it was prevented from engaging in order to prevent the condenser icing over,...). have you tried this quick check? try engaging the A/C for a second or 2; this should engage the Aux Fan until a minimum of a few seconds has passed *and* the coolant temp gets down to below about 215-220*F. (i do this every time i park and wait until the fan shuts off before i shut down the motor in order to get any excess heat out of the engine and be sure it's down to at least minimum temp to try to help reduce heat soak and underhood temps.) as for "getting hot when parked/shut down", these things do heat soak the coolant temp gauge sender when shut down so it initially reads high when you key-on for a hot start, but you should see temps come back down in the first few seconds after you start up (assuming your cooling system is functioning properly). cheers! e '94 XJ - 230K+ miles -------- Original Message -------- Subject: xj: Aux fan info needed!
