There are a lot of dead WJs out there... thinking a 603/602 '87-'92 vintage 2.5/3.0 TD from a Mercedes... the wrecking yards want nearly $2400 for a used engine to replace the 4.7L V8. I don't know why these things are failing... I've had two, no issues whatsoever... Anwyay, would a 4.0L bolt up to the 45rfe? (they used the 42re with the 4.0 in the WJs). What other Diesel, or economical gas engine could I use to replace a dead 4.7? thanx, john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://wagoneers.com/fotos/fotomeister/ SAVE power, use LINUX: http://johnmeister.com/tmcp.pdf SAVE yourself: http://freegift.com SAVE fuel, use synthetics: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Nov 2008 09:11:43 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: xj: WJ Diesel conversion. A bit of research last night revealed that the Liberty Diesels will work. They were mated to the 45rfe and 545rfe transmissions. The concerns I have are related to the computers... this isn't like wiring in a fuel solenoid or a distributer to make it work, everything on these newer engines is controlled by the computer. I don't know if I could install a mechanical injection pump to bypass computers or not. Mating a KJ/CRD wiring to a WJ/4.7L V8 might not be possible. I'm not afraid of electronics or computers and if I had the data on inputs/outputs and electrical requirements could design and build an interface or computer system to make it all work. Getting that kind of information could prove impossible. The other option is to go with a Mercedes Diesel and mate it to the 45rfe, if possible. Otherwise get the 602/603 (2.5 I-5/3.0 I-6) with it's auto trans and fabricate a divorced transfer case mount into the Jeep NV247. If I have enough length. I've offered $1,500 for this WJ: http://wagoneers.com/WJ/rigs/1999-Limited-needs-engine/dead-wj.html I'm thinking it'll be less expensive, and less trouble to put a Diesel in my '83 J10. I've located a couple of 4.7L v8's for $2,500, I'd be into it about 5k after swapping and fixing... not sure I could sell it for that and not sure I could afford to drive it. :) john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://wagoneers.com/fotos/fotomeister/ SAVE power, use LINUX: http://johnmeister.com/tmcp.pdf SAVE yourself: http://freegift.com SAVE fuel, use synthetics: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Nov 2008 10:00:35 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: xj: here we go... always wanted one of these: :) http://oly4x4.com/onevehicle.php?id=668400 ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://wagoneers.com/fotos/fotomeister/ SAVE power, use LINUX: http://johnmeister.com/tmcp.pdf SAVE yourself: http://freegift.com SAVE fuel, use synthetics: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Nov 2008 10:37:36 -0800 (PST) From: Ed Kummel Subject: Re: xj: here we go... Main thing I need is a clean gas tank from a Grem or Spirit (late model AMX) so I can set up my EFI pump for the Spirit. I figure since I get almost 20 mpg with the infamous Carter Computerized version of the BBD (although this one keeps clogging up with rust from the tank, even with 3 inline filters and a magnet!), I should be able to get close to 25 MPG in the car with an AW4 (2wd from a Cherokee) and Jeep MPFI. The Eagle will be my winter traveler.
