I also picked up a new crank seal for that location. Does anyone have any tips for this job? Thanks in advance, Marc Z in NC. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Feb 2009 19:45:43 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: Re: xj: Harmonic Balancer change rent the puller or get one... will make the job very easy... also, while you're in there consider replacing the timing chain and water pump... be careful with the oil seal on the front shaft... john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://freegift.com http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On Wed, 11 Feb 2009, Marc Z wrote: # Hello everyone, # # On my '89 XJ, with the 4.0 inline six, I've picked up a harmonic balancer # (aka, crankshaft pulley) because the rubber is slowly appearing out the front # of the current one. Previously, it got hot, cracked the head and cracked the block on the driver's side near the water pump. I got my hands on a short block that was rebuilt by a local rebuilder, which was supposedly out of a 97 jeep, and seems to have a 96 casting date on it. He put the girdle from the original (cracked) engine on the new short block for me, which I wasn't quite expecting. The head is a head from alabama cylinder head, purchased from quadratec. The newer style head was required due to the coil on plug setup requiring four mounting bosses that don't exist in the earlier heads, and at $500, the new head seemed like a bargain compared to getting a core head and having it rebuilt. The unfortunate part is it's my brother's jeep, so after it has made it out of the break in period, I have to give it back. Suppose the upside is that I'll get the 93 back, which is my wheeling rig, so I can actually go wheeling again. It's been quite a while since I've driven a stockish XJ - the 89 died two years ago, and the 93 has a 5" lift with 33" tires and a locker in the front, so it doesn't really drive quite stock. They make pretty decent drivers, but I'll tell you from experience it's a lot easier driving them than swapping an engine on one ;) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Feb 2009 09:27:28 -0800 (PST) From: diesel john Subject: xj: Re: [CJ-10List] TF/727 NP/208 swap the TF727 used in the Jeeps is a piece of crap. they changed stuff internally for Jeep... the TF727 used in the CJ-10A is supposedly the same as used in big block Chryslers... remember Elephant power from the '60's? (assuming you were even alive in the '60's. ;) This is what I expected when I got a Wagoneer with a TF727... instead I got the joys of swapping a trans because the morons didn't route oil to the trans cooler when it was in park!!!! I'm hoping that the cj-10a is really a good trans... :) For the best Jeep trans you want an AW4 out of an XJ, or a 45RFE out of a WJ... thats the auto behind the 4.7 - 99 -04. the auto behind the 4.0 in the ZJ and WJ is a piece of crap, it's the 42RE. john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://freegift.com http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On Thu, 12 Feb 2009, Omar rodriguez wrote: # Hi # # I used the TF in the wagoneer 83, men is a bag of problems. (got rid of the chevy) determined that a Mercedes Diesel 4x4 is not a viable option, dollarwise. that leaves me with a Jeep setup. Have a Diesel in a CJ-10A, that I can't insure with my current company and is NOT 4x4... so that presents the following current options (keep the popcorn handy) to either make it a 4x4 or find another Jeep to make into a Diesel. 1) put GW axles under the CJ-10A... $650 - $1000, then build a bed... $500 or so. needs a starter too... 2dr, a bit ugly, slow, but kind of cool. not that much work. found axles for $650, unknown ratio.. might be cool to put the cj-10a on the road that way, would use broadform insurance... 2) buy a GW, remove the body, drop the CJ-10A drivetrain into it, move the cab over and build a custom bed on the GW frame... $1000 give or take. same insurance solution. 3) buy a YJ and put the Nissan Diesel into it... $1500 - $3500, plus a fair amount of work sell the CJ-10A cab and parts... have a buyer for the cab willing to pay $1800. 4) wait for my J10 to be finished, drive it with the 4.2 and look for a 2.5 - 3.0 Mercedes Turbo Diesel to mate to the existing T-5. (ANYONE KNOW OF AN ADAPTER for Mercedes Diesels to Jeep T-5 or T-18s? or better an AW4? ) 5) buy a YJ with a small engine (2.5L) and drive it, wait for the J10 to be finished and then put a Diesel in the Jeep of my preference. $2-$3k or drive them as is and pick one... found a couple of nice YJs up in BC, importing them doesn't appear simple though. 6) do nothing... which is what I hope to do today. ;) I test drove an '89 YJ the other night... liked it... enjoyed it's tight turning radius, felt nice... much nicer than my '48 cj-2a. Could see driving a YJ daily. have a great day... john -o|||||o- 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WJ) 15 mpg 4.7L V8/45RFE/NV247 1991 Mercedes 300D (124) 29 mpg 2.5L Turbo Diesel/AT (Shadowfax) in work: 1983 Jeep J10 Stepside (SJ) 14 mpg 4.2/T-5/NP208 (Superdawg) 1975 Jeep J10 long bed (SJ) hydraulic dump trailer 1986 CJ-10A 3.3L Diesel/AT - for sale - $4500 1967 Jeep J100 (SJ)Panel 232/T-85/D20 - for sale - $2900 -o|||||o- http://wagoneers.com/johns-vehicles.html ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://freegift.com http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ End of xj-digest V1 #2954 *************************
