I have had problems with the # cheap Chinese import rotors that were solved by using the over-priced OEM # rotors from the dealer. # # But what seems to be the root of the problem has been that the calipers tend # to stick. They drag which overheats the rotor causing it to warp. Usually it # is because my caliper pins got contaminated and corroded. So whenever I do # the brakes I remove, clean and grease the pins. If they are pitted then I # replace them. If the rubber is torn or damaged then I replace the calipers. # # Another problem that I have run into is the rubber brake lines swell on the # inside when they get old. It allows the brake fluid into the caliper when # braking but will not allow all of the pressure out when releasing the brakes. # So the calipers drag for a while after braking. Was not noticeable in long # distance driving but in town (stop and go) the calipers were dragging all the # time and really overheated my rotors. # # Keep an eye on the wheels and you can tell when they start dragging. If the # wheels are getting unusually hot or there is excessive brake dust on the # wheels then it is time for a quick inspection of the pads, calipers and pins. # # I think someone already mentioned the lug nut torque. I have not had that # problem on the Jeeps but I have had it on other vehicles. Something else to # watch out for. # # Dave M # 79 DJ # 91 XJ # 97 ZJ # # At 01:36 PM 2/23/2009, john wrote: # >DO NOT reinstall factory OEM parts... the problem will persist, unless # >they've changed them, doubt they have... # > # >john # ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Feb 2009 08:40:23 -0800 (PST) From: diesel john Subject: xj: Re: update on the tug yeah, I had purchased the '85 GW for the axles... but my son and the scrapper thought it was a sin to part the gw... supposedly all that was wrong was the xfr case... so my son talked me out of it, gave me the '67 J100 Panel back... trying to sell it now... the '85 GW has a weak vacuum motor for the NP229, we disconnected it and forced it into 4wd full time manually. I did find another pair of GW axles from an '87 with fewer miles and the same 3.31 gears... they come up from near Tacoma on Saturday... Going to park the tug until I get the axles swapped, oil changed and wiring cleaned up... round tires are also preferred. ;) the aged bias ply tires are brutal and even at only 45 mph the engine is just wound too tight. :) driving my 300D today... :) the other mod on the tug I'm thinking about is removing the driver's side arm rest, or adding a booster seat so I sit up a bit higher. ;) trying to decide now if I want to use the NP219 or NP208... thoughts? john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On Tue, 24 Feb 2009, Greg Owen wrote: # It looks funny next to that jeep TJ.
