But it would probably be difficult to dance to. Seriously though...this sounds like a bearing noise...alternator, idler wheel bearing kinda thing. I would suggest the screwdriver stethoscope method to figure out where it's coming from. It really doesn't sound like the water pump. The sound reverberates too much...it sounds like it's vibrating on a bracket. I had a similar thing with my aircompressor clutch. It wasn't grabbing when actuated' Made a very similar noise! It has a howling sound coming from maybe the water pump? I actually think it used to do this before. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTlBraC8XzA Jesse Barbieri The Computer Works (518) 755-9625 Rosendale, NY 12472 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Mar 2009 09:40:12 -0400 From: KLuebs-at-washgas.com Subject: xj: Re: Howling Check the back of the harmonic damper..when they get old and the rubber shrinks, the pulley will walk towards the block. Mine is rubbing on the timing cover, it is getting replaced this week as soon as I borrow a puller. The idler pulley can also get loud when the bearing starts to go south, and the belt can make some surprising noises. To check the belt, spray something on it and if the noise changes, it's the belt . - --Kurt ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Mar 2009 10:14:54 -0600 From: Jon Morrissey Subject: xj: front tow hook Hi, EJS right around the corner, woohoo! Hey I was wondering if anyone had a front tow hook and mount for an XJ that they wanted to get rid of. Thanks, Jon ------------------------------ End of xj-digest V1 #2969 *************************
