While my '72 Cutlass is out getting the cancer cut from it's sheetmetal body, I've got its 455ci engine sitting on a stand (mainly stock) with a set of "E" heads (the large valve ones) waiting for a refresh...it doesn't need a full rebuild, just fresh bearings and rings and gaskets...(along with the rebuilt heads) My major concern is the oil to use in this engine. The heads *do* have hardened valve seats, and I've knurled the guides...but because the engine is basically stock, it was designed to run with the oil of the '70s... There is quite a bit of chatter on the "interwebs" about newer oils causing all kinds of damage to older (30 year and greater) engines...(the most famous is the Ferrari GT owner ending up with a destroyed engine in a half a million dollar car because today's oil is junk). Of great concern, of couse, is the lack of zinc that acts as a valve seat lubricant... so, now I come to the point here... Amsoil. How would it fare against something like a Shell Rotella for classic car engines? Keep in mind, that this engine (yeah, it's a W-30) in its stock form, put out almost 500 HP and over 600 FT-LBS of torque...I figure with the massaging and port pocket grinding and intake, I should be making more than that. The advantage of a big Olds engine is that it makes the peak power at under 5,000 RPM, so I'm not too worried about the engine flying apart! This seems to be the point of failure, from my readings. Amsoil oils have adequate ZDP (~1100ppm). Rotella has ~1500ppm. Valvoline VR-1 is what I plan to use on my stroker (~1200ppm).
