Everything just drops right in. THIS IS THE PICTURE YOU SENT: http://wagoneers.com/XJ/tech/vacuum-hose-4.0-suspect.jpg Here's some that I took years ago, on an '87 4.0L: http://wagoneers.com/XJ/tech/Engines/87-4.0L-b.jpg http://wagoneers.com/XJ/tech/Engines/87-4.0L-a.jpg http://wagoneers.com/XJ/tech/Engines/87-4.0L-c.jpg http://wagoneers.com/XJ/tech/Engines/xj-tech-88-injector-wiring.jpg http://wagoneers.com/XJ/tech/Engines/xj-tech-88-fuel-rail-loose.jpg I'm not sure where those vacuum lines in your picture are supposed to go, but it looks like they're on a thermal switch... but I can tell you that messing with it like that wastes time and doesn't fix it. Those hard plastic lines clog up and should be replaced, NOT repaired. TO SHOW YOU HOW SIMPLE THIS COULD HAVE BEEN, I googled replacement vacuum lines, etc... got this: 1988 JEEP CHEROKEE LAREDO 4.0L 242cid L6 MFI (M) : Emission : Vacuum Harness Price Core Total Advice DORMAN Part # 46004 More Info {#53004868} Vacuum Harness; Rear Part Image $17.06 $0.00 $17.06 Add to Cart DORMAN Part # 46003 More Info {#53004838} Vacuum Harness; Front Part Image $17.06 $0.00 $17.06 Add to Cart Also noticed that the cap is missing off the fuel rail bleeder valve. john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ John, I truly appreciate your feedback. At least you've given me some ideas to look at. The Cherokee was shifting normally until I got it back from the mechanic that did the fuel pump/fuel filter replacement. I mentioned the vacuum lines only because he replaced a rubber fitting that went from one large vacuum fitting into two smaller ones. I don't know what this fitting is called or I'd try and find it to replace it. As it is, the mechanic used two smaller hoses onto the vacuum fitting instead of the molded one. Could you tell me where the transmission fuses are located? And since I didn't like the 'mickey mouse' way that this guy replaced the molded vacuum fitting with two separate lines, could you tell me what this rubber fitting or the metal thing that they plug into is called? I appreciate your help. I'll attach this picture in case it doesn't show on this email Thanks, Rudy rudinski-at-verizon.net ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Mar 2009 21:50:52 -0700 (PDT) From: Ed Kummel Subject: Re: xj: Re: 1989 Jeep Cherokee Vaccum Diagram 4.0 Litre Automatic Tranny I found out about a vacuum leak last winter when my heater wasn't working. Heat was getting through the bypass valve, but the damper door inside the cabin was not staying shut (opened?). Turns out that a vacuum motor redirects hot air form the fan blower into the cabin. With a disconnected vacuum line, the door wasn't staying closed and I was not getting any heat in the cabin. So! My question to you is, are you getting hot air into your cabin? If not, then it definitely is a vacuum problem.
